NBA notes: Howard scores 19 points in Lakers debut

Howard scores 19 points in Lakers debut

Dwight Howard had 19 points, 12 rebounds and four blocked shots in his Lakers debut, but Los Angeles still dropped to 0-6 in the preseason when DeMarcus Cousins rallied the Sacramento Kings to a 99-92 victory on Sunday night.

The Lakers finally unveiled their new franchise center after Howard sat out the first five preseason games while exercising caution with his surgically repaired back. The six-time All-Star played 33 minutes and made five turnovers, overcoming six months of game rust with energy from the opening tip.

Kobe Bryant scored 21 points as the Lakers' new starting five got its first game action together, playing down the stretch of a tight game against the Kings, who finished the game with 10 unanswered points.

Cousins scored 16 points and put the Kings ahead with consecutive layups in the final minute. Bryant and Steve Nash missed late shots as Sacramento (4-1) hung on with a lineup mostly consisting of reserves against the Lakers' starters.

Meanwhile, the Lakers have waived forward Chris Douglas-Roberts and center Greg Somogyi.

PACERS: Indiana wants starting swingman Paul George to stick around at least two more seasons.

Team officials said they have exercised an option that will keep George with the team through the 2013-14 season. Last season, George averaged 12.1 points, 5.6 rebounds and 2.4 assists, and he's expected to play an even bigger role this season as the Pacers hope to contend for an NBA title.

Indiana also released center Luke Nevill and guards Sundiata Gaines and Blake Ahearn.

NUGGETS: Denver exercised third-year options on forward Kenneth Faried and swingman Jordan Hamilton for 2013-14.

Faried averaged 10.2 points and 7.7 rebounds as a rookie last year. Hamilton, acquired from Dallas in a three-team trade in June 2011, averaged 4.4 points and 2.4 rebounds as a rookie last year.
