Those who are interested in attending massage therapy classes, be it for a hobby or for a career, will find that there are numerous ways to learn the profession. Massage schools offer students technical, hands-on training courses, while some local tech colleges and vocational schools will also offer massage therapy classes.
The process of deciding which massage therapy classes are right for you can be an overwhelming process. This is especially true if you are looking at making a career out of massage therapy. Is a traditional massage school best, or a two year college program? Maybe a massage school that specializes in the Asian techniques of massage therapy would be better.
Conventional Massage Therapy Courses
Students taking conventional massage therapy courses focus more on human anatomy and kinetics as well as pathology (the study of disease).
Different massage techniques are also looked at and students will learn how these modalities are practiced. After just a few classes, students will start practicing massage techniques on their peers. Within a few weeks, students will start performing public massage sessions. Many schools have a student clinic, which allows students to schedule appointments either outside of the school environment or inside the school's clinic.
Outside sessions are typically carried out on the student's own time. Typically, students can schedule student clinic hours any day of the week. Times will vary according to the school's hours and whether or not an instructor will be available to supervise. Certain states require that massage therapy students must perform their sessions inside of the school clinic and with a certified or licensed instructor overseeing the appointment.
Students will be required to complete a certain number of hours learning in a classroom environment. They will also have to perform a set number of massages either per week or month and a set number of massage sessions for each modality. Additionally, students may have to perform a massage on their instructor, after which they will be evaluated on their performance.
Students will also need to begin thinking about how they will draw in clients. Business plans will typically be created, which outline every step the student will take in creating their new business. This will also include plans for securing financing and how they plan to market themselves.
Massage Therapy Courses at a 1-2 Year Massage Therapy School
A one or two year massage therapy school will provide students with an associate's degree or a diploma. However, they will not be granted any certifications or a license to begin practicing. It is important for students to research their state's licensing requirements and be prepared to meet the requirements before starting to practice.
Oftentimes, two year massage therapy schools will require that students train at a local spa, massage clinic or salon. This allows students to practice the massage techniques they have learned in a professional environment. A two year school will also provide students with an opportunity to receive more comprehensive massage business training.
Specialty Massage Therapy Schools
A specialty massage school will train students in a specific technique or area. These can include Asian techniques (such as Ashiatsu, Ayurvedic or Qigong), canine massage (practiced on dogs) or equine massage (practiced on horses). There are also massage schools that specialize in the medical field. Massage therapists would learn how to work with patients who are suffering from a pain syndrome, new mothers and those who are recovering from a trauma or recent surgery.
Numerous other modalities may be studied in more advanced massage therapy courses. Students can learn how to perform Reiki, hot stone massages, trigger point, craniofacial therapy, neuromuscular therapy, Tracer therapy, infant massage and more.
It is important to remember that massage schools will only instruct students on techniques and prepare them for their licensing exams. It is the responsibility of the student to follow through with the exam after they have finished their coursework.
