Cowboys' rushing overshadowed by Texas' old-school power game

Read more stories on OSU's lost to Texas.

Go to John E. Hoover's blog

Reason, however, regained a foothold on Saturday night at Boone Pickens Stadium.

Texas and Oklahoma State didn't exactly play lock-down defense, but the Cowboys and Longhorns did provide definitive proof that the tailback is not obsolete, that there is still room in this 21st century game for running the football.

O-State and Texas still operated their respective versions of the spread, complete with four- and five-receiver sets and fleet-footed quarterbacks and an often frenetic hurry-up pace.

But No. 12-ranked Texas' dramatic 41-36 victory was dominated and decided by old-school power football.

Hey, guess what? We're gonna hand off. And there's nothing you can do about it.

This was a matchup of the Big 12's two best rushing offenses, with Oklahoma State riding an average of 308 yards per game on the ground compared to Texas' 259.

The combatants mostly lived up to that billing Saturday, with the Cowboys rushing for 275 yards and Texas 136.

But Texas' numbers are misleading. Most of the night, the Longhorns lived off quarterback David Ash's passing, which has matured this season thanks to patience on his part and rational thinking by his coaching staff.

Ash stood tall early and again late - he was 30-of-37 for 304 yards with three TD passes - but as Oklahoma State mounted a comeback behind a punishing running attack, the Longhorns also suddenly turned to the ground game, putting together back-to-back grinding touchdown drives late in the third quarter and midway through the fourth.

Texas went into the final stages of the third quarter with 29 rushing yards on 22 attempts. But, as UT's sizable edge in time of possession (36:36 to 23:24) came into the play in the fourth quarter, UT runners were made to look like Earl Campbell and Ricky Williams by OSU defenders' exhausted arm-tackling efforts.

On one play, Daje Johnson slipped away from six Cowboy tacklers as he zigged back to the right; on the next, Joe Bergeron broke through two more OSU defenders as he zagged left.

Texas gained 107 rushing yards in the final 18 minutes, averaging 5.6 yards per carry.

Oklahoma State's ground game got going early - Joseph Randle went 69 yards just 39 seconds after kickoff - and the Cowboys stayed with it, most spectacularly with quarterback J.W. Walsh's slick draw play that covered 50 yards.

But on one late play, OSU - trailing by a point and facing a third-and-6 from the Texas 9 - ran the ball up the middle. It was stopped for a gain of just 2 yards, and Quinn Sharp hit a 24-field goal that gave the Cowboys a 36-34 lead with 2:24 to play.

It proved a risky and eventually fatal gambit by Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy. The Longhorns had just marched 75 yards twice, virtually unmolested on either possession as they did almost all their work rushing the football.

"We felt like it was the smartest thing to do," Gundy said. "Could be wrong."

With so little time left, Gundy probably figured the Longhorns would have to throw the football to win. Putting the game on Ash's shoulders seemed like a sound philosophy. After all, last season he threw four touchdowns and eight interceptions.

But this is the Big 12 Conference, after all. Passing wins games. And Ash, whose TD-to-INT ratio came in at 7-0 on this day (he did throw his first pick of the season), was up to the task.

Ash converted a fourth-and-6 play with a perfect throw over the middle to D.J. Grant for 29 yards, then threw short for a gain of 5. He followed that up with a long, high ball to Mike Davis, who leaped high for a catch over Justin Gilbert and a 32-yard gain to the Oklahoma State 5.

From there, Earl Campbell - er, Joe Bergeron put the game away by plowing through the Cowboys. His final carry, a dive of 2 yards, put Texas ahead 41-36 with just 29 seconds to play.

Texas was brilliant on third down in the first half, converting 6-of-9 after dreadful ineffectiveness on first and second down: 2.6 yards per play (not counting a surprise 44-yard touchdown pass).

"The biggest mistake we made in my opinion was third downs in the first half," Gundy said.

Why Doesn't Obama Take More Of An Interest In Golf?

Why Doesn't Obama Take More Of An Interest In Golf?

I mean this seriously. He has played over a hundred rounds of golf since his swearing in. That's a lot of golf. Yet, he doesn't appear to be a fan of golf at all. This is odd for someone that plays as often as he does.

Bill Clinton was famous for his love of watching and attending PGA events. Buzz Patterson's book Dereliction of Duty describes some of this, ahem, passion.
I approached President Clinton on three occasions at this golf tournament, Roger, to ask him for the go-ahead to launch this attack. We had Air Force fighters in the air, ready to drop bombs and to repel Saddams forces, and on three occasions, President Clinton could not be bothered to take the phone call from Sandy Berger. So, on three occasions I approached the President, he brushed me offhe wanted to watch the golf tournament. So I saw, really, for the first time, the dereliction of duty, as it were, by President Clinton not being ablenot being willing to take the phone call while thousands and thousands of Kurds were being slaughtered by Saddam Hussein.
Both Bushes were big golf fans as well. As I watch the Ryder Cup this weekend, I am reminded of this story:
Entering the final day, the Americans were four points down, a huge margin to make up. But they had been given a pep talk by the then Governor of Texas, George W Bush, who had read out the no surrender address from the Battle of the Alamo. It was so belligerent that David Duval stormed out of the locker room shouting, Lets go out and kill them. The Americans duly staged an almighty comeback and it all came down to the 17th green. The US player Justin Leonard nailed a monster 45ft putt, which prompted his team-mates, their wives and caddies to rush on to the green and high-five each other, dressed in their ludicrous maroon uniforms that made them look like they worked at a cut-price pizza joint. They had forgotten that Jos Maria Olazbal, the Spaniard, had yet to finish his game. Olazbal, looking flustered, missed his putt and America won the Ryder Cup.
Talk to any of your friends or family that golf frequently, and I can assure you they are watching or paying attention to the Ryder Cup. This is hardly some game-changing issue. It's just... very odd. Posted by: JohnE. at 11:38 AM

Kodak dropping out of the consumer inkjet printer business in 2013

DNP Kodak dropping out of the consumer inkjet printer business in 2013

More gloomy news from Kodak: the company just announced that it will stop selling consumer inkjet printers in 2013 and instead focus its efforts on commercial printing products. This decision hardly comes as a surprise: Kodak filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy earlier this year and attempted to auction off a stockpile of patents valued at up to $2.6 billion. The company stated on Friday that it expects to take a $90 million hit due to its floundering inkjet business. Kodak's garage sale attracted interest from unlikely alliances in the form of Apple and Microsoft versus Google and Samsung, but reportedly only reeled in disappointing offers under the $500 million mark. Hoping to rebound next year as a "lean," mean, successful machine, we'll just have to wait and see what develops for this fallen photography frontrunner.

Poetry: The revolution happened and you didn't call me | Overland ...

The Revolution Happened and You Didn?t Call Me
Maged Zaher
Tinfish Press

Although I was rather disappointed by a recent novel billed by its publishers as an ?Arab Spring novel? (you may read my review of that book here), I am not prepared to accept that the cataclysmic events that have rejuvenated and disfigured so much of the Middle East cannot result in good Anglophone writing. A serious researcher of the literary dimensions of these upheavals would, of course, consult Arabic-language poems, fiction, blogs, nonfiction and song lyrics; yet, as a non-Arabic speaking fan of political art, I have no choice but to look for the literary accompaniments to these events in the work of suitably engaged, English-language writers. I am therefore grateful to Hawaii?s Tinfish Press for publishing the new collection by the Cairo-born, Seattle-based poet, Maged Zaher.

Zaher began to write in English a few years after arriving in the US from Egypt, and has since published four collections, including the book under review. As indicated by the titles of his collections ? including Portrait of the Artist as an Engineer and Farout Library Software, a collaboration with Pam Brown ? Zaher is something of a wit and has an interest in many facets of contemporary life. But do contemporariness and light-heartedness make for a political aesthetics? Can Zaher?s detached, ironic voice succeed in a cogent treatment of the recent ? and, seemingly, ongoing ? revolutions that have toppled rulers and instigated civil wars?

Zaher is an abundantly self-reflexive, self-deprecating writer, all too aware of his own privileged status as a transnational observer of his turbulent birthplace. In concert with the perspective described in one of the earlier poems as ?a postmodern version of everything?, this book does not seem to directly engage with the revolutionary events and their consequences. Many of Zaher?s poems instead depict comedic instances of a world reduced to style, affect and atmospherics, a world saturated by what philosopher Jean Baudrillard has termed transaesthetics:

Sipping beer at random downtown
Cairo is sexy today
The old left are fashion-conscious
And the anarchists are tangoing with everyone

Zaher?s Cairo is ? to use another famed Baudrillardian term ? a hyperreal space in which the exaggerated aesthetic surface of things has displaced their socio-political Real. Here, what matters is not why millions have taken to the streets and squares of Cairo and other Arab cities, but the potential for such events to offer amusing vignettes in the voice of a sardonic, cosmopolitan onlooker:

Despite the ruling elite
We can now park for free downtown
And watch the masses
Engage ? kindly ? in border disputes

This level of subjectivity ? no matter how fluid, flexible, nomadic, deterritorialised and so on ? cannot stand in for a tangible investment in transformative political action. And it is to this reviewer?s relief that Zaher?s poetic journey to and from his native city during the uprisings is not entirely made up of a kind of Romantic, apolitical sophistry which has been a dominant feature of so much innovative poetry of the last forty years in affluent Western societies. At its most effective, Zaher?s work is an articulation of the need to break with bourgeois apathy and boredom, and a subtle attempt at taking part in the suffering and struggles of the oppressed.

The following poem, for example, starts with a solipsistic, jocular deconstruction of the self, but it soon turns into something of a call to interrogate social hierarchy:

A day without sexual concerns
I got ? unnecessarily ? over-caffeinated
Sitting somewhere in the ghetto
And flipping a coin:
To accept or not to accept the surrounding privileges?

What would this ?not accepting privilege? look like? The poem?s urbane speaker is perhaps reluctant or unable to imagine this possibility, but he does not resume dwelling on egoistic motifs either. That he comes to propose the prospect of rejecting inequality ? by ?flipping a coin?, however offhand the image may appear ? challenges the speaker?s initial ?sexual concerns? and his anxiety about drinking too much coffee; and it invites the reader to wonder if preoccupations with sex and health are not somehow related to being unfairly privileged.

The book?s most engaging and most politically astute poems are those written during the poet?s second visit to Cairo earlier this year. This section of the book starts with a curious piece in which it is deemed ?appropriate? to use language ? ?to cuss? ? against riot police. It seems quite unlikely that the author of these poems would have personally participated in street battles; yet his suggestion to deploy language as a form of resistance grows into a compelling, even truthful proposal for the reminder of the book. Here the poet finds himself engaged in ?netting a home from conversations? and wondering what this home would ?look like without this second language?.

It may be observed that here Zaher is indirectly referring to a sublimated urge to somehow revive his own first language ? Arabic ? by writing about the goings-on of an Arab country in his ?second language?, denoting that his project is, at least in part, one of an exile?s never-ending search for an elusive home. As such, Zaher?s poems come to articulate the void of political disenchantment. Incapable of either directly participating in the revolutionary passions of his native country ? by admitting, with admirable honesty, that he is ?not a good rebel? ? he cannot help but find himself drawn to the historic gravity of these passions, and finds it difficult to come to terms with their ?failing concepts?

In between historical events
The body is dragged
So little time to conquer
So little time to make peace with the failing concepts

The book ends, in my opinion, on a false note, with a rather blas? remark, with Zaher claiming that his work is ultimately ?concerned with sensuality / It was written while walking a city / With soft desire toward everything.? I am delighted to write that in this book?s most gripping pieces, in their mostly understated yet undeniable yearning for an alternative to trendy, commonplace passivity, I?ve found a hard, inquisitive intelligence contemplating the shortcoming of our postmodern condition. Zaher?s poems highlight the inefficacy of our ?failing concepts?, and by so doing encourage the reader to countenance ? and perhaps even imagine breaking with ? the limits of contemporary, middle-class existence.

Detroit 2025: After the Recession, a City Reimagined

The metamorphosis grew from desperation. In 2008, two of the Big Three carmakers were swirling toward the sinkhole of bankruptcy. The city's population, which peaked at 1.85 million during the post?World War II auto boom, was approaching 700,000. Tracts of wilderness, abandoned factories, and empty houses sparked a perverse fascination with Detroit's ruins. "This whole area really bottomed out," William Clay "Bill" Ford Jr., Ford's chairman and a great-grandson of the automotive company's founder, says.

But then something powerful and unexpected happened: Visionaries and ordinary citizens, tired of living in a crumbling city, decided to quit waiting for someone to fix it. "I think there was a realization by everybody in this region, not just in Detroit, that the way we were doing things was a broken model," Ford says. "At Ford we had to completely reinvent ourselves."

The reinvention was aided by the group that Ford's great-grandfather had resisted so viciously, the United Auto Workers (UAW). "When things were the bleakest," Ford says, "UAW president Ron Gettelfinger and the union took concessions that allowed Ford to survive and ultimately thrive. Ron said to me, 'Look, we've got to get out of this together.' If you can take entrenched institutions like the auto companies and the UAW and completely redefine the relationship, then it should be possible for the city of Detroit to do it too."

That was Bill Ford's epiphany; other Detroiters had their own. People with foresight and guts began investing in the city again. Detroit natives who had fled their broken hometown trickled back, joined by pioneering young people who saw past the city's blight. Instead, they saw available buildings, cheap rents, and a welcome mat for innovators. They saw an iron work ethic and fierce energy. And in a landscape ravaged by depopulation and decay, some bright people saw a blank canvas on which to paint a new urban model.

LANDSCAPE URBANISM

Reemerging waterways and feral forests claim land left open by sharp population decline. Detroit goes green with planning that takes advantage of the city's unique ecology.

WATER CITY

The daylighting, or unearthing, of Bloody Run and other creeks makes water key to a core redevelopment of 3500 acres.

GREEN MACHINE

Renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and biofuel production from urban forests greatly reduce dependence on an aging power grid.

CONNECT & BUILD

Waterside paths and parks are used not only for play but also for commuting. They link neighborhoods and promote business development.

URBAN FARMING

Agriculture becomes a small industry for Detroit. Farms export produce to surrounding areas and support a thriving locavore movement.

INFRASTRUCTURE

The water-based redevelopment of Detroit leads to the construction of new bridges, the repair of old ones, and the refurbishing of adjacent streets.

'Anarchy' actor dies in fall, is suspect in death

Matt Carr / Getty Images file

By Associated Press

Court records show "Sons of Anarchy" actor Johnny Lewis was released from jail a week before being found dead in his driveway after police say he apparently killed his landlady.

Los Angeles police said Thursday that the 28-year-old Lewis is the only suspect in the death of 81-year-old Catherine Davis, who was discovered slain inside the hillside home in Los Feliz.

Authorities say they are investigating Davis' death and that it appears she was beaten. They say the actor died Wednesday after climbing atop the home and either jumping or falling to the ground.

Lewis played Kip "Half-Sack" Epps in the FX show.

Actor Johnny Lewis was found dead at this Los Angeles house after apparently falling from the roof of the building he lived in. He is also a suspect in the death of a woman who is thought to have been his landlord and was found dead inside the house.

Lewis pleaded no contest to assault with a deadly weapon and attempted burglary in separate cases this year, according to records.

He enrolled in a drug, alcohol and psychiatric treatment program over the summer, the records show.

Lewis was released from county jail Sept. 21.

As a condition of his probation in both cases, he was ordered not to use narcotics.

Lewis' attorney Jonathan Mandel said Thursday he was "surprised" and "baffled" by the deaths.

Mandel declined to immediately comment on Lewis's criminal history or possible drug problems pending consideration of client confidentiality requirements.?

Before Lewis was discovered Wednesday morning, neighbors reported hearing a woman screaming in the home, said Los Angeles Police Cmdr. Andrew Smith.

Neighbors also told authorities that a man had jumped a fence, assaulted a painter and homeowner next door and jumped back.

It's unclear whether drugs or alcohol were involved, but police are investigating that possibility based on the circumstances of the crime, Smith said.

Lewis had a career spanning more than a decade, mainly in small roles. He played Ricky in the 2007 movie "AVPR: Aliens vs Predator ? Requiem" and was Dennis 'Chili' Childress for two seasons on TV's "The O.C."

His role in "Sons of Anarchy" came in 2008 and 2009.?

Walking Children Through a Death in the Family - College Park Patch

We are coming up on the one-year anniversary of?the death of a?dear friend of mine.

I met Monte in college. He was flamboyant and loud and, as a freshman away from home, I was both terrified and fascinated by him.

He had a voice like a gospel angel and wasn?t afraid of conducting a public performance, wherever that might be: Walgreens, a bar or restaurant or randomly in the middle of the sidewalk in New York City where we both went to live after college. When his spirit was moved to song? he sang!

Monte struggled with cancer and died too young at?39 years old. I've been thinking about Monte a lot lately, I?ve been having dreams about him and I know it?s because the anniversary of him dying is only days away. Randomly, when I see someone that reminds me of him or hear a song that I know he?d like, my eyes begin to tear up and I?m instantly reminded that he isn?t here to pick up the phone and call to tell unimportant details of my day to.

?Oh my word Monte, you?ll never believe what this woman at the DMV is wearing!?

My children have noticed my moments of sadness. The other day, out of the blue, my youngest son said, ?Mommy can we watch that video of your friend singing to L in your belly??

I have a video of Monte singing to my belly at my baby shower when I was pregnant with L. If the house were on fire, I?d grab my children and that VHS tape and run.?

We watched it and halfway through my older son appeared in the room, realizing what were watching and said, ?I want to see it from the beginning!? So we watched it again and again, never tiring of hearing his beloved voice.

Monte still has a Facebook page, thankfully it hasn?t been shut down. Friends and family continue to tag Monte in pictures and in status updates. It feels like he?s still apart of our lives as his face will randomly appear in my newsfeed.

I want to instill in my children the compassion to acknowledge other people?s sadness while they are grieving. Instead of sheltering them from my sadness, I?m welcoming them into it.

I?m allowing myself to cry in front of them, not something I would normally do. And when I miss Monte, I tell them a funny a story about him. I tell them how much Monte loved them. We pull out the VHS tape and we watch him again and again. We've watched the video so many times that we often will say, "I love ya baby!" exactly how Monte does in the video. It has become our "inside family joke." (See attached video)

Pull out pictures of your loved one who have passed and continue to make them a part of your children?s lives. Tell stories, share memories and most important allow your child to ask questions and express their own grief or sadness. Open the window for your relationship to flourish, and welcome your children into your own grief.

Romney says Clinton can 'do a man a lot of good'

(AP) ? Republican White House hopeful Mitt Romney is unlikely to win Bill Clinton's vote, but that doesn't mean he can't soak up a bit of the popular former president's luster.

The two men stood side by side Tuesday as Clinton introduced Romney before the GOP candidate's speech to Clinton's annual global conference in New York. Clinton recalled working with Romney to save AmeriCorps, and praised the former Massachusetts governor's efforts to persuade fellow Republicans to support the national service program.

Romney, taking the podium, returned the compliment.

"If there's one thing we've learned in this election season, by the way, it is that a few words from Bill Clinton can do a man a lot of good," he said, prompting loud laughter and applause from the crowd.

It was a clear nod to Clinton's speech praising President Barack Obama at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C., earlier this month, and the slight uptick in the polls that Obama enjoyed soon after.

"All I got to do now is wait a few days for that bounce to happen," Romney quipped.

Such moments of bipartisan levity have been rare in a campaign marked by harsh accusations, heavy-handed rhetoric and relentless attack ads between the presidential campaigns and the outside groups that support them.

Obama's campaign currently is running one such ad against Romney that uses a clip of Clinton's convention speech where the former president says Romney wants to "take us back to the policies that got us into trouble in the first place."

But any resentment was noticeably absent Tuesday as Clinton and Romney appeared chummy, patting each other on the shoulder and chatting onstage after Romney's speech.

"That was good," Clinton told the man hoping to dislodge Clinton's party from the White House.

Before the speech, Romney spoke backstage with Clinton and Clinton's daughter, Chelsea, said Romney spokesman Rick Gorka. He declined to say what they discussed.

Clinton has an outsized influence on the presidential election more than a decade after he left office. Both Obama and Romney have pointed to Clinton's economic leadership as an example for the nation, citing prosperity and a federal budget that was balanced under his leadership.

Clinton is using the full weight of those credentials to boost Obama's bid. In his convention speech, he systematically rebutted Romney's attacks on Obama, accusing the Republican of pushing an economic plan that doesn't add up.

The Obama-Clinton political alliance was back on display a few hours later when the two Democrats shared a handshake and a hug on the same stage where Romney had spoken earlier in the day.

Normal protocol, Clinton said, would require him to simply introduce the president and then be quiet.

"I just want to make one comment. I'm going to finish that speech I started in Charlotte," he said, poking fun at himself over a sermon that at times seemed like it might never end.

Obama, before beginning a wrenching speech about human trafficking, thanked Clinton for the warm introduction.

"Although I have to admit," Obama joked, "I really did like the speech a few weeks ago a little bit better."

Self Help Guidelines To Feel More Content | MUDANZA URGENTE ...

Are you a positive or negative thinker? Listen to your inner voice for the answer. If you constantly focus on the negative, then you could be sabotaging the outcome of a goal you wish to reach. Listen to the positive voice that tells you you can do something, and ignore the negative voice that says you can?t.

No matter what aspect of yourself that you decide to improve you can be sure that there are other people out there working on the same thing. Try to find these people either in every day life or in online forums so that you can share tips as well as have support.

Consider learning an instrument as part of your personal development. You probably had some type of music training when you were young, and it is never too late to learn again. Learning an instrument can expand your appreciation for various types of music. Music teachers for adults can customize lessons and use music that are more appropriate for adults. Therefore, do not worry that you will only be learning children?s songs. Being able to play an instrument is a wonderful feeling, you are really missing out if you don?t give it a try.

Take a night class to add some interest to your life. Sometimes the same old drudgery can get to even the most easy going individual. Perhaps your circle of acquaintances is getting old? You have nothing to talk about when you are with other people? A night class could add some new friends and conversational material to your repertoire!

When working on your personal development, it is a good idea to recognize the steps you are taking right now to improve your life in the future. Acknowledge and give yourself credit for the work you are doing to better your life. It is important to not dwell on the negative things, but to focus on the positive.

Positive affirmations can be a powerful tool for your personal development, but not if you speak them by rote, without engagement or interest. Always get emotionally involved when you repeat your affirmations to yourself. When you are repeating your affirmations, invest your full attention in them and concentrate on building up positive feelings.

Practice discipline in all its aspects. Whether on a mental, psychical or spiritual level, discipline is an important thing to have and to practice. If you suspect that you might be overindulging in something, take a step back and really look at yourself. After you have accessed the problem, you can then correct your behavior.

Be your best. Regardless of what you do, do it right the first time and every time. Whether you are taking out the trash or closing a multi-million dollar real estate deal, your best effort is required. When you give only your best to every endeavor you are showing yourself what you can accomplish.

Changing your sleep schedule can improve your life in great ways. Often times we are getting too much sleep and a lot of the day is wasted. If we are able to go to sleep earlier we can usually wake up earlier. When we wake up earlier that allows us to have more time to do the things we love to do.

A great way to aid your own personal development is to learn from the mistakes and pitfalls of others. Read about and talk to people who went through similar problems you are facing, and see what kinds of mistakes they made. Make sure not to make these mistakes yourself.

So many wonderful things to learn and do! Human possibilities are almost infinite. We hope these tips will give you new ideas and a new impetus to the unfolding of your talents. Time is the only limit, once you have set a course toward realizing your full capacities.

Finding the statistical fingerprints of election thieves

ScienceDaily (Sep. 25, 2012) ? The art of swaying an election is as old as democracy itself. Strategies like ballot stuffing, redistricting, voter venue switching, and temporary traffic detours have skewed regional results, and sometimes determined the winner.

While some tactics get exposed the old fashioned way -- by angry voters or investigations -- others don't. But new research suggests some kinds of election fraud leave a trace in the voting data.

In a paper appearing September 24 in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, a team led by Stefan Thurner brought science to the problem.

"We got into this by chance, when a Russian colleague brought us the 2011 Russian Duma-election data and asked us to take a look," says Thurner. "From the first look we were all pretty shocked, and decided to take a second look."

Thurner, a Santa Fe Institute External Professor who heads the Section for Complex Systems at the Medical University of Vienna, and colleagues looked for two kinds of rigging: incremental fraud, where votes for one party are kept in the ballot box while those for the other candidates are tossed, and extreme fraud, which shows 100 percent voter turnout in a district, all voting for the same party.

The team examined data on number of eligible voters, valid votes, and votes for the winning candidate (or party) from a dozen recent elections around the world. By comparing the distributions of votes for the winning candidate against turnout numbers, they found that rigged elections show a different voting pattern than fair ones.

In fair elections, a nation's voting pattern tends to feature one cluster, showing a general trend of voter turnout and vote for the victorious party (though some nations' regional voter preferences can distort it). Rigged ones show a cluster, but with a smear of votes toward the upper right for incremental fraud. Extreme fraud has a second, smaller, completely separate cluster at the top right corner, signifying up to 100 percent turnout and votes for the winner.

Next, the team developed a model to detect how much forged or manipulated results affected the outcome, then ran through all possibilities of both fraud types playing 0 percent to 100 percent of a part in the election, and compared those to actual data to determine their prevalence.

Among the countries studied, data from recent elections in Russia and Uganda showed both the smear of incremental fraud and the second cluster of extreme fraud, with up to 64 percent of districts being affected in Russia's 2011 vote and 39 percent in 2012. Other countries' data showed little to no such trends.

"I think it could contribute to the benefit of democracy if for every nationwide election on this planet, the raw data is made available on say a United Nations or OECD database," says Thurner. "One could then think of a set of quality standards and checks for any election -- like the ones we presented -- or better ones."

Stuart Broad not taking India lightly ? Cricket News Update

Indian bowling might have been their weak link of late but England skipper Stuart Broad is not reading too much into that, as the two sides gear up to play each other in a T20 World Cup Group A match, at the R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo today, Sunday, September 23, 2012.

While speaking to media reporters on the eve of the summit clash, the 26-year-old Nottinghamshire gangling pacer said that they would not be reading too much into India?s weaknesses, rather they will focus on their strengths going into the match.

?They have some experienced bowlers but they have a very strong batting line-up ? We would rather concentrate on our strengths,? said the English skipper when asked to comment on India?s weak bowling line up.

"They?ve players who can be dangerous if they are allowed to get set. Obviously, we have watched the match against Afghanistan and we have some strategy for them," he added further.

After having played their group matches at the R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo, England will head to Hambantota or Pallekele to play their Super Eight matches. Broad was also surprised to see the quick wickets in Hambantota and Pallekele and vowed to exploit the seam friendly conditions there during the knock out stages.

"It's good that it's helping the fast bowlers,? said the right-arm medium pacer, who has to date played 39 T20 Internationals and has claimed 43 wickets at an impressive average of 22.83.

?I watched Kallis' spell against Zimbabwe and was pretty impressed seeing the carry as well as some of the deliveries that skidded off the surface...Hopefully, once we are in Pallekele for our Super Eights, we would be able to exploit those conditions," he added further.

Both the sides have already qualified for the Super Eight Stage, after having beaten minnows Afghanistan in the tournament opening fixtures. The Three Lions will be, however, more confident than Dhoni and his Men in Blue, as they thwarted the minnows with 116-run margin, as compared to India?s 23-run win.

To date, India and England have played each other twice in the history of T20 World Cup, with both sides winning one game each.

Iterations: Recruiting The New Labor Force

bike messengerMost Apple fans become slightly uncomfortable at the sight of Apple?s latest television commercials featuring celebrities talking aimlessly to their iPhones. A subtle message in these ads is that consumer technologies can now place virtual assistants in the palms of our hands. The advertising logic is as follows: get a new iPhone, ask it for information or to run tasks, and it will oblige. In the case of those celebrity commercials, it almost feel as if they?re talking to a digital version of the real life assistants they employ. When it does work, Siri helps Apple create a deeper emotional bond between the consumer and their technology. While handheld technologies are providing varying levels of assistance to users, a similar wave is taking over the San Francisco Bay Area, not just with bits, but humans, too. A number of separate forces are converging to make segment, organize, and mobilize human workforces for just about any human-powered task one could imagine.
