This is a guest blog post between Adrian Harper, owner of ProFitness Ireland and Kelly James Martinovich, Australia?s leading female personal trainer and owner of one of the worlds best equipped Gym?s ? The Shredded Strength Institute. Today is part one of Adrian?s interview with Kelly on the topic of women?s health.

P.F -?Great to have you doing a guest blog for us today Kelly where we aim to cover the topic of women?s health! In no particular order here goes : Can you give us a little bit of information on your background please?

K.J.M ? Sure! Currently I am Co-Director of the Shredded Strength Institute along with my business partner Marty Williams. Owning our own facility is pretty much a dream come true.

Since the age of three I had always been involved in dance, however my dream to be a professional dancer changed after I was hit by a car and I unfortunately sustained some major injuries. There is always good in every situation though because as a result of my rehabilitation I was able to meet some amazing people who helped me on my way to recovery and introduced me to specific areas of rehabilitation and training. I started working in a gym at the age of 15 and have done so ever since. Before owning the Shredded Strength Institute I had worked in over 40 different fitness centres, so I have been lucky enough to see what methods work for best results and which do not. I have also been fortunate enough to have learnt from some of the best coaches and health experts in the World. Each year Marty and I travel wherever needed around the World to make sure we keep up to date with current trends and updated research on training and health.

P.F -?We are seeing a growing population of females struggling with weight loss, do you know of reasons why this is?

K.J.M - There are many reasons for this but we could start by recapping on three of the main reasons why our bodies store fat.

1.?Malnutrition- Even if you eat all organic it is still a fact that the food we eat now does not contain as many nutrients and minerals as the food our great grandparents ate. As a result, our bodies can be starved of vital nutrients we need for good health.

2.?Stress- Stress can rear it?s ugly head in a number of different way. It can be external stress like work or a difficult relationship, it could be internal stress such as inflammation caused by injury or food intolerances or it could be starvation stress caused by not getting or absorbing the nutrients or minerals needed by the body to be healthy. Stress can also cause many people to crave ?comfort foods? which can result in poor eating habits or bingeing on more calories than the body needs.

3.?Toxicity: If our body is a poor detoxifier we will store toxins in our body fat as a safety mechanism to protect us from getting sick. It is a fact that we need to detoxify nasty chemicals each and everyday. These chemicals can come from the fumes we breathe in if we clean our house with chemicals, ?the fumes we breathe in on our drive to work and even the chemicals in the make up, skin care or shampoo we use each day. ?If we don?t eat the right foods or exercise enough to help our bodies to detoxify then we can struggle to lose body fat as easily as we would like to.

P.F -?In Ireland especially we find ladies store most of their excess body fat on their midsection and calfs, what would be reasons for this?

K.J.M - I am a strong advocate of the Biosignature Method devised by Coach Charles Poliquin. The Biosignature Method?reveals that where people store their body fat is an indication of their hormonal profile, and stubborn problem areas can be due to an imbalance in the body?s biochemistry, especially with hormones.

In biosignature, fat on the sides (also called the love handles) has a direct relationship to insulin and how well your body deals with carbs and sugars. Fat on the stomach is related to cortisol which is a stress hormone and fat on the calves is related to growth hormone or how well someone sleeps.

P.F -?Breakfast with many Irish women is corn flakes or bran flakes which they perceive to be healthy, can you tell them why this is a really bad option?

K.J.M ? Cereal is a terrible option for breakfast and it is such a shame that so many woman are lied to about what is healthy and what is not by mainstream media. Cereal is a bad option because it is usually laden with sugar and additives and is generally too low in protein. It will also have a negative impact on your hormonal levels as well as on the neurotransmitters of the brain. I recommend starting the day with the Meat and Nut Breakfast, which you can read about on Coach Charles Poliquin?s website.
