Back from Afghanistan, soldier finds comfort in chores of family life

Not much more than a week back from Afghanistan, 1st Lt. Aaron Dunn smiles while holding his baby, Emma, at home in Fountain, Colo. on Dec. 8, 2012.

Aaron Dunn kisses his wife Leanne as they reunite during an arrival ceremony for soldiers returning from a deployment in Afghanistan, at Ft. Carson, in Colorado Springs on Nov. 30, 2012. 1st Lt. Dunn, with the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, had not seen his wife and baby since he deployed in March.

Brennan Linsley, a photographer with The Associated Press, spent time with the family of First Lt. Aaron Dunn over the past month as they adjusted to Aaron's?homecoming from Afghanistan.

"Emma was 5 months old when I deployed, and 14 months old when I returned," explains?Dunn, pictured above holding his daughter beside the Christmas tree at his home in Fountain, Colo.

Emma had little clear memory of him when he came home, Dunn explains, though he had been able to witness her growing up during his 9-month deployment thanks to the wonders of modern communication. "I was able to stay in touch with the family and had the luck to watch Emma begin to crawl via Skype," he says.

Nevertheless, it has taken some weeks for her to accept his role as a parent after so long away.?"I have basically let Emma set the pace with what she is comfortable with," Dunn says.?

Aaron Dunn removes his belongings from his army duffel bag on the morning of his return from a deployment in Afghanistan, Nov. 30, 2012. Dunn's combat team was charged with engaging Taliban fighters in Kunar Province and mentoring Afghan government soldiers.

Asked what he'll miss about Afghanistan, Dunn says: "Probably getting to do my job. It's one thing to train, but it's a whole different thing when you are actually doing what you have worked so hard at during training. The rewards are there."

"In my opinion, its tougher on the families, especially after the unit takes a casualty. I personally can't imagine waiting, not knowing if your loved one is alive or even alright, and having a panic each time a car drives by your drive way thinking it's the military chaplain and escort coming to see you."

Asked about switching gears from fighter to family man, Dunn says: "A lot of people seem to think that 'quality time' will make up for a long absence. It doesn't. Its 'quantity time' that does that. It's the time spent doing things that are fun, but also the time spent doing the daily chores, and other routines that firmly bring a family together."

Three weeks back home from the war in Afghanistan, Aaron Dunn and his wife Leanne pray during services at their church, in Colorado Springs on Dec. 23, 2012.

"War and coming home are going to mean different things to each soldier," Dunn says. "For me it was God and family. I get my security in life from my hope in God, and my companionship and support from my family."

Asked what's the best thing about being home, Dunn says: "Family - at the risk of sounding cliched, I really don't care about much else but being with family and the ones I love... and the ability to decide on a whim to go somewhere without any concerns or restrictions - like getting shot at."?

Any ?fiscal cliff? bill would violate GOP?s ?72 hour? pledge

With time running out, it remains unclear whether Republicans and Democrats will strike a deal to prevent the nation from sailing over the ?fiscal cliff? in the new year. But one thing is for sure ? if lawmakers push through a last minute deal tomorrow, Dec. 31,? it would violate the GOP?s pledge to post all legislation online at least 72 hours before a vote.

During the first two years of the Obama administration, Republicans were incensed as Democrats rammed through major legislation such as the economic stimulus package and the national health care law without allowing lawmakers and the public adequate opportunity to read and debate the legislation. In the 2010 midterms, Republicans vowed to usher in more transparency if they were to gain power.

?We will ensure that bills are debated and discussed in the public square by?publishing the text online for at least three days before coming up for a vote in the House of Representatives,? read the GOP?s ?Pledge to America,? released before the 2010 election. ?No more hiding?legislative language from the minority?party, opponents, and the public. Legislation should be understood by all interested parties before it is voted on.?

John Boehner repeatedly echoed this pledge when Republicans were in the minority, but since taking over as House Speaker, he has disregarded it in high stakes battles. This is another reminder about how lofty campaign promises about transparency inevitably give way to the reality of Washington, no matter which party is in control.

To be sure, it?s theoretically possible that after January 1, all sides could reach a deal and allow 72 hours before a vote. But by that point, the nation will have already gone over the cliff. So, averting the cliff dive would require a violation of the pledge.

An A to Z guide to the Islamic Republic of 'Banistan'

Getty Images, file

All of these things have been banned in Pakistan at one time or another. Clockwise from top left: Long-haired musicians, 'The Da Vinci Code,' kite-flying, Salman Rushdie's 'Satanic Verses,' India (usually in the form of its newspapers and TV channels) and alcohol.

By Wajahat S. Khan, NBC News

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan -- Last month, it was cellphones. Before that, it was motorcycles, shawls and jackets. Earlier this year, it was the BBC, Twitter and YouTube. In 2011, it was porn websites. In 2010, it was Facebook. In the 1990s, it was Indian television and musicians with long hair. In the 1980s, it was Salman Rushdie's "Satanic Verses." ?And in the 1970s, it was booze.

All banned. In Pakistan. By Pakistan.

Through the decades. Pakistan's state and non-state actors have found a way to regulate, boycott, ban or completely outlaw technology, information, literature, media and even entire communities.

The result? The Islamic Republic of Pakistan, once imagined as a secular, democratic haven for India's minority Muslim population, may well have become the land of "Banistan."

Babar Sattar, a Harvard-educated lawyer, is one of "Zia's Children" - the generation who grew up during the 1970s and 1980s when the culture of forbiddance took root through ironclad legislation passed by the country's Islamist dictator of the time, Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq.

"The proclivity to ban is the continuing manifestation of expanding religion-driven morality at the expense of personal liberty," Sattar told NBC News. "We don't even recognize that there exists a need not to allow collective outrage?or shame to pillage individual rights."

Here's an A to Z of what's been curtailed in "Banistan."?

Alcohol: Pakistan was a pretty wet place until the late premier Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto banned alcohol - days before he was removed by an Islamist general in a coup in 1977. Though a heavy drinker himself, Bhutto's ban was meant to move him closer to the religious margins of the country. The political strategizing didn't work for him (he was executed), but prohibition in Pakistan stuck. Still, booze is available for the connected and the rich.

The only brewery in Pakistan is a 150-year-old tradition.? Business is booming despite strict prohibition laws.? NBC's Amna Nawaz reports.??? ?

BlackBerry services: Pakistan's blasphemy laws are regarded as the toughest in the Muslim world. But when hundreds of websites were banned in May 2010 for "blasphemous content'" that was appearing on social networks, Pakistan decided to do away with BlackBerry services, too.?

Cellphones: This year saw Pakistan's ?interior minister slam a blanket ban on cellphone services across the country?to prevent handsets being used to detonate suicide bombs.?On at least two religious occasions in 2012, Eid and Ashura, when terrorist attacks were expected, almost 120 million Pakistanis couldn't use their cellphones, even in case of emergency.?

Pakistani Christians shout slogans as they protest against the movie 'The Da Vinci Code' in Lahore on June 3, 2006. The screen adaptation for the bestselling book by the same name -- starring Tom Hanks as the professor who comes across the Jesus Christ/Mary Magdalene union imagined by author Dan Brown -- was banned in 2004.

'Da Vinci Code, The': The screen adaptation for the bestselling "The Da Vinci Code," starring Tom Hanks as the professor who comes across the Jesus Christ/Mary Magdalene union imagined by author Dan Brown, was banned in 2004.?

In Pakistan's largest city, 'Old Glory' is flammable and profitable

Erotica:?In 2011, the country's Internet regulator placed a blanket ban on thousands of pornography sites. ?Meanwhile, print and DVD/CD formats of porn are available across the country, and the country manages to maintain an underground porn industry.

Food [& Beverages]: As in much of the Muslim world, pork products are banned in Pakistan. But 2012 saw even some "Halal" products?boycotted by a lawyers' association in Lahore as well the campus of a major university because they were made by?Shezan foods, a brand owned by Pakistan's minority Ahmadi sect. (Ahmadis don't think that Mohammad is Islam's final prophet and have been persecuted by successive Pakistani governments for such ideas.) Other products, including Pepsi, were also boycotted for being "Jewish."

Gambling: Once legal, gambling is now banned (thanks in large part to late prime minister Bhutto's attempts to appease the religious right in the late 1970s). However, Pakistan is a joint capital (with India) of the lucrative illegal cricket betting industry in which millions bet billions, especially when archrivals India and Pakistan play.?

Ali Azmat and Salman Ahmad of the rock band Junoon perform in Mumbai, India, in December 2003. The popular band and all musicians with long hair were banned in the 1990s.

Hair: In his own bid to transform what was left of secular Pakistan after the Islamist Zia regime, the 1990s saw prime minister Nawaz Sharif (tipped to be the next premier in upcoming elections) try to implement selective Shariah law by banning popular rock band, Junoon, and all musicians with long hair. The ban on Junoon was politically inspired, as it had campaigned for the financial accountability of those in elected office. ?But it all proved to be rather cosmetic. Rock and roll continued to flourish in Pakistan, and the shutdown only helped Junoon polish off their bad-boy image until they broke up. Meanwhile, Sharif got a hair transplant. The 2000s, however, saw a more complicated and violent hair ban, this time implemented in Pakistan's northwest by Taliban militants, who even bombed and fined barber shops for shaving men.

Pakistan's Generation Y battles to shape country's future

India: The world's largest democracy enjoys a special place in the Islamic Republic's banning regime. Some bans look to be permanent, including all Indian news channels, certain news websites and books, and all printed newspapers and magazines (India reciprocates most of these bans).?

Jokes: Forwarding a joke via text message, email or blog can result in a 14-year prison sentence. But only if it targets the country's leadership.?

Kites: The centuries-old spring festival of kite flying, Basant, based out of Pakistan's cultural capital Lahore, was also banned by the Supreme Court in 2005 when petitions were filed highlighting the dangerous after-effects of kite flying, including death by strangulation. The Supreme Court reversed the ban earlier this year.

A boy flies a kite on a hill overlooking a large relief camp run by The National Rural Support Program in September 2010.

LGBT rights: Rights for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community are curbed by social taboos in the Islamic Republic, but Pakistan's laws don't help either. The colonial-era Pakistan Penal Code of 1860, designed by the British, imposes a prison sentence for sodomy. But while lesbians have been low-profile in their run-ins with the law of the land, Pakistani transgenders made history in 2012 by successfully lobbying for a landmark Supreme Court judgment in their favor that allows them to both identify themselves and vote as a third sex -- transgender, and not male or female, as they were forced to in the past.

Minorities: First legally pronounced to be non-Muslims in the 1970s, the persecuted Ahmadi sect was further limited in its actions and exercise of religious freedoms by several laws in the 1980s. They were?not allowed to say the Muslim greeting aloud, nor call their houses of worship mosques. Ahmadis continue to be targets of notorious blasphemy laws, under which other religious minorities, particularly Christians, are also targeted.?

Nipples: Customs agents usually redact images of female nipples from foreign publications?available on local newsstands. Bottoms usually are overlooked, but full-frontal nudity is not.

Osama: As the embarrassment of Operation Neptune Spear set in after May 2011, Pakistani authorities first cordoned off Bin Laden's Abbottabad compound, then forbade foreigners in Abbottabad, then forbade non-Abottabadis in Abbotabad, then forbade all and sundry from visiting the location. Finally, they just razed the building.

One year after Osama bin Laden's death, questions remain about his life at the heavily guarded compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan.???NBC'S Amna Nawaz reports.?

Parties: According to the regulators of the largest housing authority in Pakistan's largest city, "Marriages Ceremony," "Dance Party," and "Musical Evenings" are not allowed for citizens inside their own homes. However, "Birthday Party" and "Quran Khwani / Dars" (Quran recitals and religious lectures) are.?

Quran burning: Pakistan's blasphemy laws, considered the toughest in the Islamic world, carry a potential death sentence for anyone insulting Islam. When a Christian teenage girl with limited learning abilities was accused of burning and desecrating the Quran, riots and controversy followed?as the case of young Rimsha, initially charged with blasphemy, developed into a complicated legal battle. But it soon became became evident that an imam, who wanted Christians like Rimsha out of his neighborhood, had planted evidence on her.?

For many Pakistanis, 'USA' means 'drones'

Raymond Davis (along with other intelligence contractors and diplomats): When CIA contractor Raymond Davis shot and killed two petty criminals in broad daylight in Lahore in January 2011, the anti-American uproar was so severe that the United States had to dispatch its best diplomats, including John Kerry, to negotiate his release. And although Davis was let go only through the traditional Islamic method of payment of blood money?to the victims' relatives, Pakistan subsequently clamped down on the movement and deployment of all Western diplomats, officials and contractors. Today, if you work for the U.S., or the Argentinian, or the Jamaican embassy, you will have to obtain a "No Objection Certificate" to attend a dinner if it's even one town over from where you are stationed.

Raymond Davis, a CIA contractor who was charged with fatally shooting two men in Pakistan, has been released from prison after relatives of the victims agreed to a deal. NBC's Carol Grisanti reports.

Social media: With almost 20 million Internet connections that reach even deep inside the volatile tribal areas adjoining Afghanistan, Pakistani authorities have tried in vain to regulate social media. And although Facebook recently shut down a page used for recruiting by the Pakistani Taliban, the government has never directly acted to disconnect those who support terror via social networks.?

Demonstrators shout slogans and wave placards as they protest against Facebook in Lahore in May 2010.

Shawls: In what was dubbed by the national press as the most desperate of recently taken security measures, a district in Pakistan's northwest actually banned coats and shawls, even in the dead of winter, under British colonial-era law designed for maintaining public discipline and security. The reason: their possible use to hide suicide jackets under the bulky clothing during a sensitive religious holiday.

Can social media propel 'rock star' politician Imran Khan to power in Pakistan?

Urinating: The absence of public toilets across the country, as well as the spread and social acceptance of a rural 'go anywhere' culture has created a messy challenge for government after government in Pakistan: how to stop millions from answering the call of nature when and where they please. The answer? A national ban, with threat of prosecution.

Vaccinations: Days before 161,000 children were about to inoculated for polio this summer, the Taliban banned the vaccination campaign. Even though Pakistan remains one of the three countries in the world that still carries the debilitating virus, militants continue to target and kill anti-polio campaigners, claiming that the program is a U.S. cover for espionage, similar to the CIA using a Pakistani physician to help locate Osama bin Laden in Abbotabad last year.?

It's been a tough year for Pakistan U.S. relations. Crucial NATO supply routes have been shuttered since November, there is tension over drone strikes and now the countries are at odds over the treason conviction of the Pakistani doctor who helped the U.S. locate Osama Bin Laden.?

Weddings: Forget the five-course wedding dinner. Pakistan -- once the land of extravagant, multi-event weddings -- has a law that doesn't allow for more than one entr?e at a wedding feast. The policy has been in place for several years but is only now being implemented earnestly by a provincial government that is focused on battling food wastage.?

XXX:?As porn is outlawed in Pakistan, "Tripple" is the code word nationally accepted for under-the-counter DVD and magazine purchases that are naughtier than usual.

YouTube:?YouTube is the only social networking site that continues to be blanket-banned in Pakistan since its owner, Google Inc., refused to block an anti-Islamic video last September. But Vimeo, YouTube's competitor network that offers similarly "blasphemous" material, remains rather functional and legal in Pakistani cyberspace.

'Zero Dark Thirty': Though the new Kathryn Bigelow thriller is out, it probably won't be seen in a cinema near you in Pakistan. No theater has promoted the film, no television channel is carrying its trailers, and, so far, no DVD shops are selling even its pirated versions. The reason? Well, one guess. ... "Zero Dark Thirty" is military speak for 12.30 a.m., the time the Abbotabad raid targeting bin Laden commenced in May 2011.

The Oscar-winning team of director/producer Kathryn Bigelow and writer/producer Mark Boal, along with cast members Jessica Chastain and Jason Clarke, talk about the film based on the decade-long search for Osama bin Laden, which already has critics buzzing and is stirring up controversy.

The Book Proposal?a Rundown | Writing and Publishing News

Yesterday we talked about the reasons for writing a book proposal. But do you actually know what goes into a book proposal? Here?s a rundown:

Synopsis

Whether you are writing a book proposal for a publisher or you?re creating a business plan for yourself, the synopsis is important if it describes what the book is about, who it is for, how large of a group this is and why this book is needed/wanted. Are you contemplating a book that fits into a popular genre? What is the general storyline? Is it a nonfiction book that will fill a need?a current void, perhaps? Who is the audience, how is the book organized, what makes it worthwhile, different, better than what?s already out there on the topic?

Competition
What other books are out there like this book and how are they doing in the marketplace? Is there room for another book on this topic? How is your book different, better? What can you contribute through your book that is needed/wanted and not currently covered adequately? In order to respond to these important questions, locate books like yours, study them and then compare them honestly with the book you have planned or have written.

Your Platform
Why are you the person to write this particular book? Do you have a following? Are you known in this field/genre? Do you have connections that will help you to get word out about your book, market it? An author I know worked for a popular kitchen store chain when she came out with her book on custard desserts. She landed a publisher because management agreed to carry the book in their stores and arrange for signings. And she sold a lot of books through the store chain. That was a major connection that paid off well for her.

Marketing
How will you promote this book? What do you know about book promotion? The fact is that no matter which publishing option you choose, you will be responsible for promoting your book. And the time to start thinking about it is before you write it. There are things you can do to make your book more salable while writing it! And there are ideas you can act on in order to pave the way to greater sales once it is produced. Here?s one idea?find out how others with books similar to yours are marketing their books. How? Snoop around at their websites. Where are they speaking? What type of media exposure are they getting? Where are they posting guest blogs and articles?

Before you launch out with your great book idea, read my book, ?Publish Your Book.? You?ll find a plan for preparing your book proposal as well as an education on publishing options and instructions for how to make the right publishing choice for your book. You?ll gain a greater understanding about the whole publishing and book marketing process. As you will see when reading through the reviews at Amazon.com, this book is well-respected among publishing professionals and successful authors. This book is available in print and Kindle. http://amzn.to/Tze53Z

Whale of a tale: Pakistani fishmonger now pop star

ISLAMABAD (AP) ? Muhammad Shahid Nazir is a testament to the age-old adage that if you give a man a fish, he will eat for a day, but if you teach a man to sing about fish, his song will shoot up the British pop chart.

The 31-year-old Pakistani fishmonger catapulted to fame in recent weeks in the unlikeliest of circumstances: while hawking frozen snapper and mackerel for one British pound ($1.61) at Queens Market in London.

Not comfortable with shouting about his merchandise to attract customers, as many vendors do, he came up with a simple ditty that someone caught on video and posted on YouTube earlier this year. It became a viral sensation and has been viewed over 7 million times.

"One Pound Fish changed my whole life," said Nazir, who returned to Pakistan on Thursday to a hero's welcome and has been inundated with requests to perform and do advertisements. "I am so happy now."

To describe the song as catchy would be a gross understatement. It drills deep into your brain and sits like a lyrical jack-in-the box that goes off every few minutes, causing one to break into song involuntarily to the amusement, or perhaps growing despair, of those nearby.

"Come on ladies, come on ladies, one pound fish! Have a, have a look, one pound fish!" sings Nazir, as he points to his wares behind him. "Very, very good, one pound fish! Very, very cheap, one pound fish!"

In an era in which the Internet seems to bestow almost everyone with 15 minutes of fame, Nazir's YouTube video could have been the end of the story. But Warner Music offered Nazir a deal to record a techno-infused version of "One Pound Fish," he said. In a Bollywood-style video, he performs in a snazzy suit alongside scantily-clad dancers to a South Asian-influenced pop beat.

The music video has been viewed nearly 9 million times since it was posted on YouTube about three weeks ago. As the song gained momentum, people began talking about it as a serious contender for the fabled No. 1 Christmas single in the United Kingdom ? the song that tops the chart in the week the holiday falls. Past chart-toppers include The Beatles' "I Want to Hold Your Hand" and Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You."

In the end, "One Pound Fish" made it to No. 29 on the top-40 chart. It was beaten by another Internet sensation, PSY's "Gangnam Style," which clocked in at No. 6. The No. 1 spot was clinched by a version of the Hollies' "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother" by The Justice Collective, a group of star musicians who recorded the charity single for victims of a stampede at a soccer stadium in 1989 that killed 96 people.

Nazir definitely doesn't view missing out on the No. 1 Christmas single as a setback. He has returned to his home country to get a visa for France for the release of his hit song there and also has plans to take "One Pound Fish" to the United States, where he hopes it will make a big splash.

It has been quite a ride. He grew up in the little-known town of Pattoki near the eastern city of Lahore. His father owned a transport company, but his passion was always music, and he spent his youth singing both religious songs and pop hits by stars like Michael Jackson.

He traveled to Britain to study but eventually got a work permit and started working as a fishmonger in London nine months ago, he said. He now wants to pursue a career in music, but the fish stall in London will always hold a special place in his heart.

"I can't forget England, Queens Market, my fish stall because that place changed my whole life," said Nazir.

These are prominent with children and models because you can clean it away when you wish to or it will slowly fade away till it?s absolutely gone. This type of skin art has the exact same quality as the long-lasting one due to its comparable tattoo designs? the only distinction is it could simply be gotten rid of by water and isopropyl alcohol.

Kinds of Temporary Tattoos

Henna Tattoos? Tattoo designs applied utilizing henna ink. This ink is made from the sap of the henna plant which can also be made use of to color hair.

Ballpoint Pen Tattoos? A kind of skin art which makes use of a typical ballpoint pen instead of henna and can be washed away naturally by sweat or by water.

5 Kinds of Tattoo

Natural? triggered by injuries

Amateur/Professional? makes use of traditional tattooing approaches and devices

Cosmetic? thought about as permanent comprise

Medical? made use of to show exactly what allergic reactions or disease an individual has

Long-term Tattoo Removal

Common Skin Art Tattoo is typically considered long-term because it is impossible to be removed naturally; it could not be removed by water or alcohol. On the other hand, these long-term tattoo designs can still be eliminated by means of laser treatment.

Getting rid of these permanent tattoo designs can trigger severe pain which is more compared to the pain of applying them on your skin. The approaches utilized in this laser skin art removal include excision, cryosurgery, salabrasion and dermabrasion.

Tattooing by an amateur that usually takes location inside jails has a raised threat of getting you an infection. There are severe infections that could be sent through unsterilized equipment and polluted ink and needles. Some of these infections are staph, herpes, hepatitis, tuberculosis, tetanus and HIV.

Pride, jobs motivation in season finale

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

The Jacksonville Jaguars and Tennessee Titans insist they have plenty on the line Sunday in both teams' last game of the year.

Pride; a victory and a sense of accomplishment heading into the offseason, playing well enough to have a job in 2013.

Head Coach Mike Mularkey is finishing his first season in Jacksonville, and it's the worst in the franchise's short history -- even if the Jaguars (2-13) manage a win. They have lost four straight since beating the Titans 24-19 in Jacksonville on Nov. 25, including a 23-16 loss to the Patriots last week.

Even with 19 players on injured reserve, the Jaguars have been competitive. Linebacker Paul Posluszny said the scores nobody should see in the NFL in recent weeks won't happen with Jacksonville.

"That will be the positive thing coming out of the season," Posluszny said. "Regardless of the record and the situation we're in, guys played hard. We always stuck together. You never saw us give up. A game never got so out of hand because of a lack of effort. Now, we made some bad plays, no doubt about that. But it was never a lack of effort."

"We're not lacking any type of motivation," Titans cornerback Alterraun Verner said. "I wouldn't say that's a tipping point or a boiling point. We just need a win."

The Titans sacked Chad Henne seven times the last time these teams met, but Henne threw for two touchdowns and had a passer rating of 108 in the win. Henne won't have receiver Cecil Shorts (concussion) or running back Rashad Jennings (shoulder) after both were placed on injured reserve Monday.

The Jaguars still have rookie Justin Blackmon, their leading receiver with 58 catches, and tight end Marcedes Lewis. Ranked 31st in the NFL in total offense, the Jaguars also are coming off a game in which they had a franchise-record 202 yards in the first quarter and finished with 436.

Getting a win would mean so much for the Jaguars with so many changes likely in the offseason.

"It's the last time this team, this group of guys, gets to play together, so we really want to finish with a win," Henne said. "We want to go there on the road, win and then come back with that good feeling and finish off the season."

Titans coach Mike Munchak likely can help himself far more than the Jags' Mularkey with a win Sunday. That would give Munchak two wins in the final three games when he meets with owner Bud Adams to explain what went wrong this season after just missing a playoff berth in 2011 by a tiebreaker.

Munchak calls this a must-win to reach the goal of finishing 6-10 after an ugly 55-7 loss in Green Bay last weekend.

"We still have a lot of work ahead us, it's not going to fix all of our problems because we win," Munchak said. "It's a good way to go into the offseason with a win rather than a loss. Having said that, once we do win this weekend, then we have a lot of work ahead of us to get where we need to get. We know that. That will all start the day after that game."

Tennessee also has some extra incentive. They have allowed an NFL-worst 451 points, just shy of the franchise record of 460 given up by the then-Houston Oilers in 1983. The Titans have never gone winless in the AFC South and need a win to match the 1-5 mark in 2004.

"Definitely that's something that every team takes pride in their own division being able to be successful," Locker said. "Obviously one win is not going to make you successful in our conference. But it does give you a good springboard going into the offseason."

2012 Social Business and Customer Service Trends | Moxie ...

2012 Social Business TrendsWe get contemplative at the end of every year. Did we do everything we set out to do? Did we meet our goals? What were the best movies we?ve seen or books we?ve read?

Maybe our year-in-review helps us predict what?s coming in the new year, or at least think about how we?ll approach things differently.

Social business and customer service have certainly seen lots of moving and shaking in 2012. Here are some of the trends that may be foreshadowing the year to come.

Social business grows up: quantifying social

Remember back in 2009 when ?social? was the new business buzzword? The world knew this was a revolution and everyone wanted to be a part of it. The only problem was that people didn?t quite know how to fit it into their budgets, how to track investments ? how to measure it.

This year marks major improvements toward wrapping numbers around social business. McKinsey?s study of the social economy exploded last summer, with predictions that the industry will add $1.3 TRILLION in annual revenue.

After years of trial and error, companies are learning where money is being wasted in social media and are modifying their course.

Stop blocking social media at work! Studies are proving the benefits of social, such as how collaboration tools are boosting productivity.

It?s safe to say that social business has grown up and, most likely, will continue to mature as technology laggards catch up.

Mobile explodes, putting new pressures on business

With the variety of mobile devices (both smartphones and tablets) now available, the ubiquity of data access, and increasing reliance on information anywhere, mobile sales are exploding with no end in sight.

That means more online business, sales, and customer service is being tapped, adding extra pressure to operations internally and externally.

Businesses are scrambling to tap the benefits of mobile, but not without encountering challenges. IT professionals are learning the role of mobile within the enterprise ? no overnight task.? When it comes to customer experience, move it or lose it: 73% of mobile users feel companies don?t deserve their loyalty if their needs aren?t being met. Ouch.

When it comes to the future of mobile, it?s looking more and more interactive.

Customer service gets way more social

If a customer complains about a product or service and the business isn?t around to hear it? everyone else will be. Studies show that nearly half of all social media users (and that?s a lot) look to social media for customer service. This year has been all about gearing up on the strategies, tactics, and tools to give better customer experiences through social.

Analysts are predicting that internal collaboration tools will be essential to keeping up with customers in 2013. Many businesses are adopting social customer experience management software.

What?s more, we?re seeing more traditional CRM giants acquiring or integrating agile social capabilities from third parties into their software. Perhaps this is the beginning of making all business more social in 2013 and beyond!

What trends have you seen in 2012? What do you think 2013 has in store for social business?

An image gallery gift from NASA's Swift

Dec. 28, 2012 ? Of the three telescopes carried by NASA's Swift satellite, only one captures cosmic light at energies similar to those seen by the human eye. Although small by the standards of ground-based observatories, Swift's Ultraviolet/Optical Telescope (UVOT) plays a critical role in rapidly pinpointing the locations of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), the brightest explosions in the cosmos.

But as the proxy to the human eye aboard Swift, the UVOT takes some amazing pictures. The Swift team is celebrating eight years of UVOT operations by collecting more than 100 of the instrument's best snapshots in a web-based photo gallery (http://www.swift.psu.edu/uvot/coolPics.php). The images also can be viewed with the free Swift Explorer Mission iPhone app (https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/swift-explorer/id465669299?mt=8) developed by the Swift Mission Operations Center (MOC), which is located in State College, Pa., and operated by Penn State.

Swift has detected an average of about 90 GRBs a year since its launch in 2004. "When we aren't studying GRBs, we use the satellite's unique capabilities to engage in other scientific investigations, some of which produce beautiful images from the UVOT that we're delighted to be able to share with the public," said Michael Siegel, the lead scientist on the UVOT and a research associate in astronomy and astrophysics at the MOC.

The targets range from comets and star clusters to supernova remnants, nearby galaxies and active galaxies powered by supermassive black holes.

"One of our more challenging projects in the past was completing an ultraviolet mosaic of M31, the famous Andromeda galaxy," said Stefan Immler, a member of the Swift team at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. "Because the galaxy is so much larger than the UVOT field of view, we had to take dozens of pictures and blend them together to show the whole object."

An ongoing mosaic project targets the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds, two small satellite galaxies orbiting our own, and makes the Andromeda effort look like child's play. Although the galaxies are much smaller than M31, they are both much closer to us and extend over much larger areas of the sky. The task involves acquiring and aligning hundreds of images and is far from complete.

With the UVOT's wavelength range of 1,700 to 6,000 angstroms, Swift remains one of few missions that study ultraviolet light, much of which is blocked by Earth's atmosphere.

The 6.5-foot-long (2 meter) UVOT is centered on an 11.8-inch (30 cm) primary mirror. Designed and built by the Mullard Space Science Laboratory in Surrey, England, the telescope module includes the primary and secondary mirrors, an external baffle to reduce scattered light, two redundant detectors -- only one has been used to date -- and a power supply.

Each detector lies behind an identical filter wheel. The wheel holds color filters that transmit a broad range of wavelengths as well as devices called grisms, which spread out incoming light in much the same way as a prism spreads sunlight into a rainbow of component colors. The detectors retain information on the position and arrival time of each photon of light, an operating mode similar to typical X-ray telescopes.

Because most ultraviolet light never reaches the ground, Swift's UVOT provides a unique perspective on the cosmos. For example, it can measure the amount of water produced in passing comets by detecting the ultraviolet emission of hydroxyl (OH), one of the molecular fragments created when ultraviolet sunlight breaks up water molecules. Other types of UVOT science include exploring emissions from the centers of active galaxies, studying regions undergoing star formation, and identifying some of the rarest and most exotic stars known.

Toward the end of its energy-producing life, a star like the sun will blow away its outer layers as its core transforms into a compact, Earth-sized remnant known as a white dwarf. This chapter of stellar evolution, known to astronomers as the post-asymptotic giant branch phase, lasts only about 100,000 years -- just an eye-blink in comparison to the star's total lifetime. To better understand the process, astronomers need to study large numbers of these unusual stars.

"The UVOT's capabilities give us a great tool for surveying stellar populations and cataloging rare types of ultraviolet-bright stars," Siegel explained.

One of the first targets for the stellar survey was the giant cluster Omega Centauri, which hosts millions of stars and may be the remains of a small galaxy. Thanks to Swift's UVOT, astronomers at Goddard and Penn State have cataloged hundreds of rare stellar types in the cluster and are now comparing their properties and numbers to predictions from theoretical models describing how stars evolve.

McCartney, 'God particle' scientist get honors

LONDON (AP) ? Stella McCartney, who designed the uniforms worn by Britain's record-smashing Olympic team, and Scottish physicist Peter Higgs, who gave his name to the so-called "God particle," are among the hundreds being honored by Queen Elizabeth II this New Year.

The list is particularly heavy with Britain's Olympic heroes, but it also includes "Star Wars" actor Ewan McGregor, eccentric English singer Kate Bush, Roald Dahl illustrator Quentin Blake, and Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton, the royal aide who helped organize the watched-around-the-world wedding of Prince William to Kate Middleton.

McCartney was honored with the title of Officer of the Order of the British Empire, or OBE, in part for her work creating the skintight, red-white-and-blue uniforms worn by British athletes as they grabbed 65 medals during the 2012 games hosted by London. McCartney is the designer daughter of ex-Beatle Paul McCartney and his first wife Linda, and she has moved to make the family name almost as synonymous with fashion as it is with music, setting up a successful business and a critically-acclaimed label.

Higgs' achievements, which made him a Companion of Honor, touch on the nature and the origins of the universe. The 83-year-old researcher's work in theoretical physics sought to explain what gives things weight. He said it was while walking through the Scottish mountains that he hit upon the concept of what would later become known as the Higgs boson, an elusive subatomic particle that gives objects mass and combines with gravity to give them weight.

For decades, the existence of such a particle remained just a theory, but earlier this year scientists working at the European Organization for Nuclear Research, or CERN, said they'd found compelling evidence that the Higgs boson was out there. Or in there. Or whatever.

All of Britain's gold medalists from this year's games were on the list, with cyclist Bradley Wiggins and sailor Ben Ainslie honored with knighthoods.

Sebastian Coe, who masterminded the games as chairman of the London organizing committee, was made a Companion of Honor ? a prestigious title also awarded to Higgs. But Ken Livingstone, London's former mayor, said Saturday he turned down a Commander of the Order of the British Empire, or CBE, recognizing his services to the Olympics because he doesn't believe politicians should get the queen's honors.

Honors lists typically include a sprinkling of star power, and this year was no different. Ewan McGregor, who came to public attention through his role as the heroin-addled anti-hero of British drug drama "Trainspotting," was awarded an OBE. The 41-year-old actor is also known for his turn as a young Obi-Wan Kenobi in the "Star Wars" prequels.

"Babooshka" singer Kate Bush said she was delighted to be made a CBE for a musical career which has resulted in a string of quirky hits including "Wuthering Heights," ''Cloudbusting," and "Man With The Child In His Eyes."

Other art world honorees included artist Tracey Emin and Quentin Blake, whose spiky, exuberant illustrations are best known through the work of his collaborator Roald Dahl.

Politicians, policemen, and spies got honors too. Scotland Yard chief Bernard Hogan-Howe was awarded a knighthood; former British foreign minister Margaret Beckett was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire. Former Prime Minister Tony Blair's wife Cherie was made a CBE for her charity work. MI5 chief Jonathan Evans was made a Knight Commander of the Order of Bath.

Also honored was the man credited with helping pull off the wedding of the decade: Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton, principal private secretary to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge (as Prince William and his wife are formally known) was made a Lieutenant of the Royal Victorian Order.

Britain's honors are bestowed twice a year by the monarch, at New Year's and on her official birthday in June. Although the queen does pick out some lesser honors herself, the vast majority of recipients are selected by government committees from nominations made by officials and members of the public.

In descending order, the honors are knighthoods, CBE, OBE, and MBE ? Member of the Order of the British Empire. Knights are addressed as "sir" or "dame." Recipients of the other honors, such as the Order of the Companions of Honor given to Higgs and Coe or the Royal Victorian Order personally picked out by the queen, receive no title but can put the letters after their names.

The New Year's honors carried the usual batch of courtiers ? even the royal household's switchboard operator got a medal ? as well as senior civil servants, soldiers, charity executives, successful entrepreneurs, established academics, volunteers, and community workers. Some of the more eclectic honors included the OBE handed to card game columnist Andrew Michael Robson "for services to the game of bridge," and the OBE given to river conservationist Andrew Douglas-Home "for services to fishing."

This Year s Best Tips For Young And Early-Career Science Writers

Democracy in action! Here are the blog posts from the ?Tips? series which have received the most traffic in 2012. Tips is a series on The SA Incubator which aims to provide young and early-career science writers with, well, tips to aid them in their budding careers. It links out to existing resources available online.

I won?t presume that those popular blog posts were the most helpful ones but they certainly were the most intriguing ones.

Tips: ?How I Write About Science? By Established Science Writers
How I Write About Science is a blog series contributed to by reputable science writers in which they tell us, well, how they write about science! It?s run every year in conjunction with the Wellcome Trust Science writing prize and is hosted by the Wellcome Trust and the Guardian. Here?s a snapshot of what the series is all about.

Tips: Insight Into Science Writing By Charles Choi
Last week, science writer and Scientific American blogger, Charles Q. Choi, contributed as guest blogger on the Scitable blog, ScholarCast. In his three guest posts, Charles explored what it means to be a science writer.

Tips: Charles Q. Choi?s Website Is A Treasure Cove
Today we feature the website of prolific science writer, Charles Q. Choi, which is packed with information about writing, pitching, how to keep up with science news and also links to numerous resources and more. Full disclosure: Charles is a blogger on Scientific American.

Tips: 12 tips from Ann Friedman
Today we showcase Ann Friedman?s twelve tips for young journalists to make it in the journalism world, published by the Nieman Journalism Lab. Friedman was formerly the executive editor of GOOD magazine and is now working on the crowd-funded publication, Tomorrow.

Tips: Deal With Missed Deadlines By Blogging Regularly
Communications consultant, Georgina Guedes, shares ten steps to getting forgiveness when you miss a deadline at The Media Online. In addition, I also point out that blogging regularly may help you meet deadlines more easily.

?

The SA Incubator also featured a number of other blog posts which were meant to help or spur/motivate young and early-career science writers. Here are some of the most popular ones from 2012.

Jonah Lehrer Turned His Back On Science
Three days ago famous science writer, Jonah Lehrer, was revealed to have fabricated quotes in his book, Imagine, which he subsequently attempted to cover up by repeatedly lying to a fellow journalist. Lehrer resigned his staff position at The New Yorker the same day. While his actions were largely interpreted as being an affront to journalism, they amounted to much more: a disrespect for and a betrayal of the fundamentally pure enterprise that is science.

Science writing program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison
The professional track master?s program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, with its strong focus on science journalism, dates back to the 1960s, making it one of the oldest such programs in the country. Over the years, some of the country?s best known science journalists ? including both William J. Broad and Jane Brody of The New York Times ? have studied at Wisconsin. And program graduate Deborah Blum(blog), a Pulitzer-prize winning science writer, is now a professor in the UW School of Journalism and Mass Communication.

Why Writers Should Be On Google+
Forget about the ghost town label that?s been stuck on Google+. And it doesn?t matter if you won?t actively use Google+ (perhaps Twitter, Facebook and what else are sufficient for you). You should still create a Google+ account. Why? Because Google can display your author information, which it obtains from your Google+ profile, in its search results. This can boost your image? literally.

Klout Is Important Even If You Aren?t Using It
Are you on Klout? You probably should be. Because even if you are not, potential employers are increasingly looking at Klout scores when screening candidates.

?

Special mention to:

Twitter List Of Young Science Writers
Twitter is great. You can scan for breaking news or trending topics, fumble the keyboard in successive 140-keystrokes manoeuvres to share news and views and socialise with all the @-ing and DM-ing. Some (power-) users also specifically follow Twitter hashtags to keep abreast of conferences and be updated with updates from blog networks, for instance. ?Following user lists is another way to be in touch with certain communities. With this in mind, I created a Twitter list of young science writers some time back.

Beckham in no rush to join new club

LONDON (AP) ? Nearly a month after leaving the Los Angeles Galaxy, David Beckham is considering "a number of serious proposals" but is in no rush to find a new team.

He has been linked to clubs in France, Australia and Asia in what would be the final chapter of the playing career of the 37-year-old midfielder and former England captain.

Beckham's management company says in a statement Thursday that offers are "on the table from a host of clubs across the world," but it's "early days in the process."

The statement says Beckham is "in no hurry to make a decision," adding that "the key is making the right one as he has always done."

Beckham ended his five-year stint in Major League Soccer on Dec. 1.

South Africa's Mandela discharged from hospital: government

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Former South African President Nelson Mandela has been discharged from hospital, ending a nearly three-week stay during which he was treated for a lung infection and had surgery to remove gallstones, the government said on Wednesday.

The 94-year-old anti-apartheid leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate has been moved to his Johannesburg home. He has been in frail health for several years.

"He will undergo home-based high care at his ... home until he recovers fully," the government said in a statement issued by the presidency.

"We request a continuation of the privacy consideration in order to allow for the best possible conditions for full recovery," it said, without offering further details.

Mandela has a history of lung problems dating back to when he contracted tuberculosis while in jail as a political prisoner. He spent 27 years in prison, including 18 years on the windswept Robben Island off Cape Town.

The former president was admitted to a Pretoria hospital on December 8 and this was his longest stay in hospital since he was released from prison in 1990.

Current President Jacob Zuma visited Mandela on Christmas Day and said the former South African leader was doing much better, making progress and in good spirits.

Mandela was also admitted to hospital in February because of abdominal pain but released the following day after a keyhole examination showed there was nothing seriously wrong with him.

He has spent most of his time since then in another home in Qunu, his ancestral village in the impoverished Eastern Cape province.

His poor health has prevented him from making any public appearances in the past two years, although he has continued to receive high-profile visitors, including former U.S. President Bill Clinton earlier this year.

Mandela became South Africa's first black president after the country's first all-race elections in 1994.

After his release from prison, he used his popularity to push for reconciliation between whites and blacks, which became the bedrock of the post-apartheid "Rainbow Nation".

Mandela stepped down as president in 1999 after one term in office and has largely been absent from public life for the last decade.

Over 17 million tablets and phones opened on Christmas

9 hrs.

Christmas day this year saw record numbers of devices coming online ? over 17 million of them, according to app analytics company Flurry. And that's not counting the ones that stayed offline.

Flurry identifies new devices as "activated" when?one of thousands of tracked apps is launched, and the company claims that this amounts to about 90 percent of all devices ? note that this is different from "activating" your new phone on a wireless carrier.

With so many tablets and smartphones on the market right now, perhaps it's not surprising that numbers should be so high. The iPad Mini, Nexus 10?and Kindle Fire all combine the latest hardware with a gift-friendly price.

By Flurry's measure, 17.4 million iOS and Android devices were activated Christmas day worldwide ? more than any other day in history by a good margin.?December saw about 4 million devices activated every day, which is about twice what December 2011 had, and Christmas day last year had only 6.8 million activations.

Flurry didn't provide a breakdown of how many of those millions were Android and how many were iOS ? and with competition fiercer than ever, it's difficult to speculate (although based on recent reports, it's likely that iOS has a solid?lead).

A second study by Mixpanel found that more than half of Internet traffic on Christmas was from mobile devices (much more than the week before), so clearly those millions of gifted tablets and phones were being put to use. Mixpanel put the traffic breakdown as 44 percent Android and 54 percent iOS, but that's of all the devices Mixpanel?saw, not just the ones opened on Christmas.

More complete numbers (including best-selling devices) will likely be released by retailers and manufacturers in the next few weeks ? perhaps at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Citizen of the Year: Bill Featherstone - Lovely County Citizen

(Photo)

Bill Featherstone

On Easter weekend of 1980, Bill and Connie Featherstone visited Eureka Springs for the first time. They returned to Dallas, and a month later, rented a U-Haul, packed up everything they owned and moved here.

"I instantly knew this is where I was supposed to be," Bill said.

Bill and Connie, who had been married a year when they left Dallas, now have roots in Eureka Springs that go back more than three decades and raised their two children here. For the past 14 years, Bill has been paying it forward as a member of the city's Parks and Recreation Commission, and as chairman, oversaw the passage of a sales tax levy to fund road repairs and facility upgrades at Lake Leatherwood City Park.

For putting his time, his energy and his heart into ensuring that Lake Leatherwood City Park will be there for future generations, Bill Featherstone is the Lovely County Citizen's 2012 Citizen of the Year.

"I accept the honor on behalf of the parks commission, the parks staff and the plethora of volunteers who contribute in so many ways throughout the year," Featherstone said. "It takes all of us."

Featherstone originally got involved in Lake Leatherwood because of sports. The backstory: when his son was 4 years old and started playing T-ball, there was only one baseball field in town, and that was a rocky, substandard field on the school campus south of town. Baseball was big in the 1980s and into the '90s, and the school teams, youth sports and adult leagues all vied for use of the field for practices and games. And before each game, team members had to walk the infield with buckets, removing rocks. Featherstone also started a soccer team that played on the infield of the school track, also rocky.

"It was embarrassing to invite other teams to play here," he said.

After the 20-year lease of Lake Leatherwood to a private operator expired in the '90s and it reverted to city ownership, the idea of locating sports fields at the park started gaining momentum. It culminated in the city's Parks and Recreation Commission proposal to build three multi-use sports fields just inside the park boundary. As a big supporter of the plan, Featherstone was appointed to the commission. His first meeting was in the summer of 1998, when the proposal came up for a vote.

"There are seven people on the commission, and it was 3 to 3," he said. "I was the fourth vote."

Featherstone knew what sports fields were supposed to look like. Born in Greenville, Miss., he grew up in Jackson, Miss., where kids played baseball on flat, green fields. After graduating from William B. Murrah High School in 1971, Featherstone attended Ole Miss, then transferred to Southern Methodist University. With a business degree from SMU, he worked for a real estate developer in Dallas for five years, but was never a big-city person -- unlike Connie, who was Dallas born and raised.

"I've been in sales all my life, and the toughest sale I ever had was to convince her to pull up roots in Dallas and move to little old Eureka Springs," Bill said.

They were debt-free but had no jobs when they arrived in town that spring 32 years ago. And they knew only one person, Connie's brother-in-law, who had moved to Eureka Springs to start a business, a gift shop adjacent to the Basin Park Hotel. Both Bill and Connie were involved in the stop that first year, Bill said, then he and King Gladden opened up a toy store on Spring Street, 'Toys and Games Unique.' It evolved into 'Noveltees,' a store that Featherstone started and ran for 14 years. Connie worked for the Chamber of Commerce and the Bank of Eureka Springs, now Cornerstone, then for Community First Bank, which Gladden had started. After 'Noveltees' closed in 1998, Bill worked for 'The Lovely County Citizen' as an ad salesman. He is now a real estate appraiser with Parrish Appraisals.

Gladden was the first person Bill and Connie met when they moved to town and was known for his "can-do" attitude -- ask Bill to tell you the story about how they drove to St. Louis on the day of third game of the 1985 World Series and got tickets to that night's game and the next two. It's an attitude Featherstone applies to revitalizing Lake Leatherwood.

"This is going to get done, and it's going to get done a lot faster and easier if everybody gets on board," he said. "Everybody should be asking 'What little bit of this can I do?'".

What needs doing, besides fixing the road from Highway 62 to the lake: turning the old CCC bathhouse, now mainly used for storage and a laundry, into a nature center and indoor meeting space. Building a handicapped-accessible bathroom with showers. Landscaping the sign at the park entrance and putting up an interpretive kiosk at the main park area. Reroute, renovate and sign trails. Build a bridge across West Leatherwood Creek at the south end of the lake. The bottom line: to make the park more attractive and more accessible to more people for more days of the year while maintaining the sanctity of the property, Featherstone said.

"You're two miles from town and all the craziness and the motorcycles and you hear nothing," he said. "That's what Leatherwood is -- a peaceful place. The ball fields are a very few acres. The rest is natural."

On any given day, however, the park is under-utilized, despite an array of recreational options. They include 25 miles of trails that spiderweb in all directions. A kayak launch ramp that is handicapped accessible can be used by everyone. An old limestone quarry in the side of the mountain is home to mountain boomers, two-foot long lizards that walk around on their hind legs like dinosaurs. A fishing trail winds down to the dam. A bait shop and small marina rents paddle boats and canoes in season. A bird-watching blind was built by a devotee of the sport, J. Pat Valentik, who has recorded 199 species of birds at the park.

"Leatherwood has a lot to give, and people haven't taken it," Featherstone said. "I think it's the greatest asset the city owns in its sheer volume and the recreational opportunities it provides -- there's not anything that compares to it."

The sales tax levy, which will run four years, will provide approximately $105,000 a year, funds that park commissioners hope to increase exponentially by using as matching funds for grants. The Lake Leatherwood committee has written the first draft of the park's master plan, which in its completed form, will detail the projects that need to be done and prioritize them.

"Eureka is really blessed as a community to have this kind of real estate donated to us," Featherstone said. "Along with that comes the obligation to take care of it."

Created in the late 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps, Lake Leatherwood City Park covers 1,620 acres, making it one of the largest municipally-owned parks in the country. It also has one of the largest hand-cut limestone dams in the country. The bath house, cooking pavilion and diving platform date from the CCC. The Leatherwood Fields Municipal Ball Park, inside the park entrance near the highway, has a lighted, full-sized baseball field and a lighted, full-sized soccer field, plus a practice soccer field, concession stand and restrooms. The ballpark hosts music and community festivals, and is used for three major bicycle events, the XTerra in June, the Fat Tire Festival for mountain bikers in July, and the Eurekan in August.
