Lilly Alzheimer's drug shows some promise in study

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? A possible Alzheimer's disease treatment from drugmaker Eli Lilly showed some promise in late-stage research, even though the drug failed to slow a form of mental decline in two separate studies of patients with the mind-robbing condition.

Shares of the Lilly climbed Friday in morning trading after the Indianapolis company announced what could be a step toward a long-awaited breakthrough in the fight against a disease that has no cure and ultimately proves fatal. But Lilly officials cautioned that it's important not to overreact to their initial results.

Lilly said Friday its treatment, solanezumab, failed to slow cognitive decline, which involves a person's memory, in two late-stage studies of about 1,000 patients each. But when data from the trials were combined, scientists saw a statistically significant slowing of the rate of cognitive decline in the bigger population.

They also saw a statistically significant result when they examined a subgroup of patients with mild cases of Alzheimer's disease. The studies focused on patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer's cases.

Lilly shares climbed nearly 3 percent, or $1.23, to $43.63 Friday, while broader trading indexes fell slightly.

The studies fell short of their main goals, and that means the drug "isn't going to the (Food and Drug Administration) tomorrow to be approved for sale," said William H Thies, chief medical and scientific officer for the Alzheimer's Association, which was not involved in Lilly's research. Still, he said the statistical significance of the combined results is important.

"If that can be replicated, that is a major finding," he said. "It's the first time we've been able to change the course of Alzheimer's disease or any part of Alzheimer's disease in people."

Lilly said it will discuss the results with regulators and plan the next steps. Full results from the studies will be presented at two scientific conferences in October.

If you look through "rose-colored glasses" at the results, there may be a sign of potential benefit on cognitive tests, but it is not clear whether that is enough to make a real difference clinically in how patients do, said Dr. Ronald Petersen, director of the Mayo Clinic's Alzheimer's Disease Research Center.

The key will be details the company will present later on brain imaging and other tests, he said. If those show that the drug is helping clear plaque, "it might mean that the drug is doing what it's supposed to be doing, but we're just attacking the disease too late," said Petersen, who heads a safety monitoring panel for two companies working on a different Alzheimer's treatment.

It's up to the FDA to decide how much faith to put in secondary analyses or results in subgroups, he added.

"The danger would be an over-interpretation of a small finding or a subtle effect," Petersen said.

About 35 million people worldwide have dementia, a term for brain disorders that affect memory, judgment and other mental functions. Alzheimer's is the most common type. In the United States, more than 5 million people have Alzheimer's, which is the country's sixth-leading cause of death.

Many Alzheimer's patients typically live four to eight years after diagnosis, as the disease gradually erodes their memory and ability to think or perform simple tasks. Current Alzheimer's treatments only temporarily ease symptoms such as memory loss, confusion and agitation. They don't slow, stop or reverse mental decline.

Drugmakers have tried and failed for years to develop successful treatments for the disease, and patients and doctors are anxious for any signs of promise. Analysts have said an approved treatment that slows the disease's progression could be worth billions of dollars in sales.

Earlier this month, Pfizer Inc. and Johnson & Johnson said they would end development of an intravenous version of their potential Alzheimer's treatment, bapineuzumab, after two late-stage studies showed it worked no better than a placebo in patients with mild-to-moderate cases.

Lilly officials cautioned Friday that their study did not show that solanezumab slowed the progression of Alzheimer's. It showed signs of slowing cognitive decline, one of many ways the disease impacts a person's mind. Even so, they were encouraged.

Solanezumab binds to beta-amyloid protein, which scientists believe is a key component to sticky plaque that basically gums up the brain of a patient with Alzheimer's disease. The drug is designed to bind to the protein and help the body remove it from the brain before it can form that plaque. Lilly said that while the individual trials missed their main goals, the combined results showed there may be some validity to this approach.

"We really think this idea of attacking amyloid plaques is a valid hypothesis, that's important news," said Dave Ricks, president of Lilly Bio-Medicines.

But Dr. Sam Gandy, head of Alzheimer's disease research at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, said Lilly's statement on the results "is very tentative."

"I believe in the notion that an amyloid-lowering agent like solanezumab will eventually work in early disease or pre-symptomatically, but whether these data provide compelling evidence that solanezumab has 'cleared the bar' just cannot be concluded" until full results are presented, Gandy wrote in an email.

Baxter International Inc. also reported some encouraging results in July from its potential Alzheimer's treatment, Gammagard. The company said a tiny study indicated Gammagard might help stabilize Alzheimer's for up to three years. Four patients who got the highest dose of Gammagard for three years showed no decline on memory and cognition tests, but a dozen others on different doses or shorter treatment times didn't fare as well.

That study was too small to prove the treatment works, but a more rigorous one involving 400 patients will end late this year, with results expected by early next year.

(John Moore/Getty Images)Mitt Romney made a joke about the so-called "birther" conspiracies that question whether President Barack Obama is an American citizen, telling a crowd in his home state of Michigan that no one has ever questioned his birthplace.

"No one has ever asked to see my birth certificate," Romney said at a rally in Commerce, Mich., as he campaigned alongside his running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan. Referring to his wife, Ann, who is also a Michigan native, Romney said, "They know that this is the place that we were born and raised."

Kevin Madden, a senior Romney adviser, downplayed the GOP candidate's comments, saying he was only making reference to the fact that he was campaigning in his home state.

"The governor has always said, and has repeatedly said, he believes the president was born here in the United States," Madden said in an email to Yahoo News.

Indeed, Romney has long declined to become involved in conspiracies about Obama's birthplace, calling the debate a distraction from real issues. But he hasn't exactly condemned supporters who have continued to question whether Obama is really an American citizen. That list includes Donald Trump, a high profile Romney supporter who has helped raise cash for the presumptive Republican nominee.

Asked in May if he is "comfortable" with Trump's suggestions that Obama wasn't born in the United States, Romney got a bit irritated.

"You know, I don't agree with all the people who support me, and my guess is that they don't all agree with everything I believe in," Romney told reporters on his campaign plane. "But I need to get to 50.1 percent or more, and I'm appreciative to have the help of a lot of good people."

The Obama campaign quickly pounced on Romney's remark, accusing him of siding with extremists in his party.

"Throughout this campaign, Gov. Romney has embraced the most strident voices in his party instead of standing up to them," Obama campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt said in an email to reporters. "Romney's decision to directly enlist himself in the birther movement should give pause to any rational voter across America."

Romney's comment technically wasn't true. As Politico's Maggie Haberman quickly noted on Twitter, reporters asked to see copies of Romney's birth certificate during the 2008 campaign?not to see his birthplace but rather to verify his full name.

Woman found ?sleep-swimming? in river treated for hypothermia

An Idaho woman was treated for hypothermia earlier this week after she was found "sleep swimming" in a river in the middle of the night.

According to the Cassia County sheriff's report, the unidentified 31-year-old woman?who has an apparent history of sleepwalking?left her home in Burley, Idaho, barefoot and in her pajamas early Tuesday. Her husband called the sheriff's office at 2:25 a.m. to report his wife was missing and a sliding glass door had been left open.

Neighbors and a search and rescue team began combing the area. The woman was found "wet and hypothermic" on the side of the Snake River about a quarter mile downstream from her home. She was taken to Cassia Regional Medical Center and treated for hypothermia.

According to the Magic Valley Times-News, police say this was the third incident in the last five weeks involving the woman:

Deputies located her one other time disoriented and soaking wet in the city of Burley after apparently swimming in the river.

Following Tuesday's "sleep-swimming" episode, a Cassia County judge "issued an order to have the woman's mental health evaluated."

According to the A.D.A.M. medical encyclopedia, sleepwalking or "somnambulism" most often occurs during deep, non-REM sleep early in the night.

Sleepwalkers "may get up and walk around, or do complex activities such as moving furniture, going to the bathroom, and dressing or undressing. Some people even drive a car while they are asleep."

The cause of sleepwalking can be fatigue, lack of sleep, anxiety, alcohol and sedatives, or medical conditions such as partial complex seizures and psychiatric disorders including "post-traumatic stress disorder, panic attacks, or dissociative states, such as multiple personality disorder."

According to WebMD.com, "the sleepwalker is unable to respond during the event and does not remember sleepwalking." It occurs most commonly in childhood but can last into adulthood.

LONDON -- As U.S. Congressman Todd Akin fights for his political life over his "legitimate rape" comments, a high-profile British politician has ignited a storm on the other side of the Atlantic over the definition of rape.

George Galloway, a member of the U.K. parliament and former leader of the left-wing Respect Party, waded into the debate around the allegations faced by WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

During a 31-minute podcast, Galloway discussed the claims made by two Swedish woman against Assange in graphic detail, claiming that his alleged behavior was at worst "bad manners" but "not rape."

The colorful Galloway -- who has been dubbed "Gorgeous George" by some U.K. tabloids ?--?is no stranger to controversy. He?grabbed headlines around the world after he shook hands with Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein in 1994 and praised him for his "strength, courage and indefatigability." He also appeared as a contestant on "Celebrity Big Brother" -- where he famously pretended to be a cat.

This week's "Goodnight with George Galloway" video podcast put him back in the spotlight.????

"Some people believe that when you go to bed with somebody, take off your clothes, and have sex with them and then fall asleep, you're already in the sex game with them," Galloway said, gesticulating emphatically. "It might be really bad manners not to have tapped her on the shoulder and said: 'Do you mind if I do it again?' It might be really sordid and bad sexual etiquette, but whatever else it is, it is not rape or you bankrupt the term rape of all meaning."

Cue gasps all around.

This is why so many rape victims never report their crimes and why so many find it difficult to speak out in court."

Telegraph assistant comment editor Tom Chivers wrote?that "the situation Galloway has just described is absolutely, 100 per cent, no-ifs-or-buts definitely rape."

He added: "Listen, George: it is possible to think that WikiLeaks have done some good things without believing that Assange can do no wrong, or that all attempts to make him face trial are some sort of grand conspiracy."

From the Ecuadorian embassy in London, Julian Assange asked the U.S. to "renounce its witch hunt against WikiLeaks." NBC's Duncan Golestani reports.

Galloway is not the first British politician to get himself into hot water over the issue of rape.

A year ago, U.K.?Justice Secretary Kenneth Clarke kicked off a similar controversy when he differentiated date rape from "serious rape." ?Calls for his resignation came in fast, but the storm settled after he clarified the comments.

'Both have acted like fools'
It remains to be seen if the same will be true in the U.S. for Rep. Todd Akin.?

Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin, who launched a firestorm of controversy after his use of the phrase "legitimate rape" and then ignited further criticism with his comments Tuesday, has said he's going to stay in the race. NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports.

An editorial in the left-leaning Guardian newspaper compared Akin and Galloway.?"They have three things in common. Both are men. Both encourage rape?deniers. And both have acted like fools."

The messages about rape from the highest echelons of political life come just after the 20th anniversary of legislation that made marital rape in the U.K. a crime.?

Victoria Derbyshire, the British radio host who took Clarke to task on his views a year ago made one point that resonates as the debate rages on both sides of the Atlantic this week.

"With respect," she told him in a flat tone, "rape is rape."

On Tuesday, the 58-year-old?Galloway sought to clarify his comments and released a statement.

"No never means yes and non-consensual sex is rape. There's no doubt about it and that has always been my position," he said.

"Julian Assange, let's be clear, has always denied the allegations. And this has all the hallmarks of a set-up. I don't believe, from what we know, that the Director of Public Prosecutions would sanction a prosecution in Britain. What occurred is not rape as most people understand it."

Broncos cornerback Drayton Florence has hung around a decade in the NFL by being a smart, steady pro.

Now that he?s closer to the end of his career than the beginning, he?s thinking about looking for them rather than being one.

Florence told Jeff Legwold of the Denver Post he wants to get into personnel when he?s finished playing.

?Just knowing what to look for in a player, I think I have that and would like to see what the opportunities are at some point,? Florence said. ?I?ve been in the league 10 years, I?ve seen all types of different players, body types. You?ve got to get the right type of player to fit the scheme that you?re running.

?It will be an interesting task, I think it would be a good fit for me. A lot of guys really don?t do it, but I?ve been around football all my life. This is what I know. I?m not going to go try to be a chemical engineer when I?m done playing. This is what I?ve been doing. I want to stick to what I know.?

The Broncos are like many teams, whose front offices contain several former players, including director of player personnel Matt Russell, assistant director of college scouting Lenny McGill and area scout Cornell Green.

Florence said he looks at film differently now, thinking how he?d evaluate players as a scout.

?I probably look at it more now from a personnel standpoint when I?m breaking down my opponent. How they put their teams together, what kinds of players that have that fit or don?t fit,? he said. ?In the preseason, especially, I kind of look at the defensive backs, the receivers and I?m always looking at the quarterbacks.?

A lot of players think the way Florence thinks, until they get into it.

The scouting world is a lot more of a grind than many realize, and especially if they?ve made a little money, it proves to be more work than many former players want.

It?s far from necessary to have played to evaluate, but smart bosses put together a blend of perspectives which includes former players, to make sure they get a broad range of opinions.

The pay?s not quite the same as playing, so Florence shouldn?t be in a hurry, but at least he has a plan.

For the former, President of Corporate Services Volker Batels claims it's treated as securely as one would with cash money, in the sense that it has many visible and invisible features.

There's also a QR code plus its corresponding label ID printed below the foil, and scanning the former or entering the latter on qr-sennheiser.com returns a virtual copy of the foil label plus a visual description. If what you have matches the label on the screen then hakuna matata.
