(Reuters) - Apple Inc said it plans to build a new solar farm with NV Energy Inc for power supply to its new data center in Reno, Nevada, a major step towards its goal of having its data centers run on renewable energy.
Apple and other technology companies such as Amazon.com Inc and Microsoft Corp, that build and run computer server farms have come under criticism for their high consumption of electricity and other resources.
These data centers cater to an explosion in Internet traffic, streaming content through mobile devices and hosting of services to corporations.
The new solar farm will provide power to Sierra Pacific Power Co's electric grid that serves Apple's data center and when completed will generate about hours 43.5 million kilowatt of clean energy a year, Apple said in a statement.
Apple already runs its largest data center in the U.S. on solar power. The center in Maiden, North Carolina produces 167 million kilowatt hours, the power equivalent of 17,600 homes for one year, from a 100-acre solar farm and fuel cell installations provided by Silicon Valley startup Bloom Energy.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. ? Upon first seeing Atlantis, a space shuttle that's been to space and back 33 times, it?s not uncommon to gasp ? or cry. The retired orbiter is displayed at an angle, with its cargo bay doors open and robotic arm outstretched, and it seems to be just barely out of reach. The sight is arresting, to say the least. The public got its first official look at the display Saturday (June 29), when the Space Shuttle Atlantis exhibition opened here at NASA's Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. "I'm not going to lie ? I shed a tear," said Jess Johnting of Boca Raton, Fla., an avid space fan who said she'd long been looking forward to the opening of the show. [ See photos of the new Space Shuttle Atlantis exhibit ] The grand opening was attended by a massive crowd and more than 40 astronauts representing all 33 of Atlantis' missions to space. It "launched" with a bang as sparks and smoke appeared to furl out of the humongous life-size fuel tank and solid rocket boosters guarding the entrance to the Atlantis building. Visitors then proceeded inside, where a giant screen shows a film on the origin and history of the space shuttle program . "I can't believe how long it took to build," said Brittney Frey, age 13, of McDonough, Ga. "It's amazing how far it's come," added her brother, Aaron Frey, age 10. After the video, visitors come face to face with Atlantis herself. "It was breathtaking. It blew my mind," said John Hurley of West Palm Beach, Fla. The sight of the magnificent shuttle grounded for good, and beginning life as a museum exhibit, was also hard for some. "I have mixed emotions. It's kind of bittersweet," Jessica Hurley said. Nonetheless, the Hurleys said the presentation here did Atlantis justice, and they planned to come back "over and over again," she added. Atlantis dominates the center of a multistory building that allows views of the orbiter from many angles . The Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex is unique in displaying the vehicle as if it were mid-mission, on orbit. The other retired space shuttles, at Washington, D.C.'s Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, Los Angeles' California Science Center, and New York's Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum, all present their orbiters in horizontal position. "The size of it ? what you see on TV doesn't compare to real life," said Ricky Rawls of Crystal River, Fla. "It's an awesome flying machine." Many said Atlantis was larger than they expected. "It's just amazing, incredible," said Mike Kitslaar of Orlando, Fla., who'd been following the preparation of? Atlantis ?for display via the KSC Visitor Complex's online webcam. Organizers of the exhibition said their prime hope for the show is to inspire the next generation of scientists, astronauts and explorers. Judging by the awed reactions of many kids Saturday, they may be well on their way toward that goal. "It was really cool," said Markis Cheng, age 10, of Arcadia, Calif., who said he'd like to go to space someday. "I've always wanted to see what happens when you float." It might surprise you to know, given the number of beer ads that you see in print and on TV, that Canada is not exactly a world leader in beer consumption. LOS ANGELES ? Eric Garcetti will take the oath of office Sunday to become Los Angeles' 42nd mayor, with a promise to do the basic things right while getting the city's economy rolling again.
The 42-year-old Ivy Leaguer who often talks of the simple pleasures of growing up in the city's San Fernando Valley ? little league baseball, riding bikes and eating ice cream ? officially takes over the job leading a sprawling city of nearly 4 million people on July 1.
He replaces fellow Democrat Antonio Villaraigosa, 60, who exits after two terms during which he pushed to improve schools and expand rail lines in a city notoriously choked by cars.
The early evening inaugural will include some celebrity sparkle, with Jimmy Kimmel and musician Moby scheduled to participate in the festivities.
"This inauguration won't be highlighted by a black-tie gala. We're having a party in the park. We want this day to be about celebrating Los Angeles," Garcetti said in a statement.
The new mayor takes charge of a city with problems all too familiar: knotted freeways, an unemployment rate hovering around double digits, many struggling schools, battered roadways.
Garcetti has said he will focus on the economy "like a laser beam" and try to recover jobs lost in the recession. His goals range from getting all city workers to contribute to costly health care to dealing with long-standing gripes about potholes and cracked sidewalks.
"We have to fix the basic things," he says.
He will be the city's first elected Jewish mayor, and his background reflects the city's diversity: he often refers to his Italian and Mexican roots. Garcetti has a temperate, wonky style ? he was a Rhodes Scholar, after attending Columbia University ? that will be a change from Villaraigosa, who was known for his outsized personality and ability to make headlines about his nightlife and dating.
It also will be a generational change. Garcetti is just a few years older than Villaraigosa's eldest daughter.
Garcetti was elected with a yawn from most residents ? not even one in four voters cast a ballot in his May runoff against Controller Wendy Greuel. Los Angeles is known for mostly ignoring the scrum of local politics.
