Top 10 Wellness and Spa Trends | 2013 | Neroli Spa

Recently, SpaFinder Wellness revealed a preview of its 10th?annual Trends Report, which forecasts top trends that will impact the spa and wellness industry and shape consumer experiences around the globe. As a leader in the beauty and wellness industry in Milwaukee, Neroli Salon & Spa encourages you to check out these top trends and learn how you can improve your health and well-being in 2013.

Healthy Hotels

In 2013 we?ll see an explosion of new hotel chains that promote healthy living. Hotels are changing to provide guests with everything they need to exercise, eat, work, and rest like they would at home. InterContinental Hotel Group recently launched EVEN (pictured here), a new brand of affordable hotels that allow travelers to maintain their healthy lifestyles.? In-room amenities include modern and natural d?cor, a luggage rack that doubles as a workout bench, a yoga mat and free weights, a circuit training guide, hypo-allergenic linens, and spa-inspired walk-in showers. Look for the first EVEN hotels opening in 2013.

The Mindfulness Massage

The ?mindfulness massage? uses breath work and techniques such as body scanning (where attention is brought to every part of the body) to help guests relax more deeply and quickly. Neroli Salon & Spa offers the Chakra Balancing Massage, which focuses on the chakra energy centers in the body. This treatment promotes mindfulness as the therapist helps connect the mind and body through deep tissue, reflexology, and energy balancing techniques. We also recommend arriving at our spa 15-20 minutes early in order to fully prepare your body and mind for relaxation.

Authentic Ayurvedic

The Sanskrit term?Ayurveda means ?knowledge of life.? Ayurveda is an ancient science which aims at preventing and healing disease or imbalances within the body. The journey toward living in harmony is the journey we all take and the Ayurvedic Practitioner is the guide along the way.?Ayurveda stresses the balance of three elemental energies, called ?doshas.? Doshas are important because when they exist in equal quantities, the body will be healthy. Ayurvedic Practitioners are trained to find where these imbalances exist and recommend treatments to bring balance back to the doshas. Neroli Salon & Spa?will soon be introducing Ayurvedic spa treatments as a form of holistic healing and relaxation for our guests.

Earthing

Earthing is a fast-growing movement based upon the major discovery that connecting to the Earth?s natural energy is foundational for vibrant health. Studies have produced fascinating evidence demonstrating that a direct connection to the Earth?s ground energy generates a powerful and positive shift in the electrical state of the body and restores natural self-healing mechanisms. Even though practicing Earthing isn?t as easy in Wisconsin winter weather, take opportunities to connect with the earth when you can (on warm vacations, hikes, etc). Go barefoot outside for a half-hour and see what a difference it makes on your pain or stress level. Sit, stand, or walk on grass, sand, dirt, or concrete; these are all conductive surfaces from which your body can draw the Earth?s energy. In warmer weather, take advantage of the wonderful beaches and parks in Milwaukee County. People who practice Earthing on a regular basis say they sleep better, feel better, and have more energy during the day.

Spa-Genomics

Humans have 30,000 genes and a 3 billion-letter DNA code. The power of genomic testing lies in the potential to pinpoint which diseases/issues could be forestalled by specific lifestyle changes. Telomeres are the only malleable part of DNA, which some studies are showing can be repaired by stress-reduction, exercise, sleep, healthy food, and meditation. Neroli Salon & Spa offers a wide variety of spa services that can help you reduce stress and live healthier.

Color Self-Expression

Look for ?painted on? self expression in 2013. This quick and inexpensive way to transform your look includes bold hair color and makeup choices, such as reverse ombre and neon eyelashes. Expect to see body art as a form of self expression and the popularity of haute ?Tattoo Spa?s? to rise. Look for nail art to transform into less bling, and more 3D textures and intricate designs. See a Neroli Aveda hair color specialist to learn about the different special effect possibilities for your new ?do.

Inclusive Wellness

The spa is becoming a place for wellness and recovering and less about luxe pampering. Expect to see more ?real bodies? at the spa. The industry will shift focus to delivering wellness to persons of all age and ability levels. More people will look to spas to heal and keep bodies functional, whether through pain-relieving and mobility enhancing therapies, nutrition advice, or the right forms of ?functional fitness? for those with physical limitations or special needs.

Label Conscious Fitness

The idea of health and wellness has become a luxury, and like any other luxury, has a fashion market to go along with it. Millions chase the ?insider elite,? giving the fitness world a distinct fashion world vibe where consumers shop for the latest fitness craze just as they search for the newest designer purse. Check out stores such as lululemon in the Third Ward, One Tooth at Bayshore Mall, or Sports Authority in Brookfield for all your fitness fashion needs.

Men:? From Barbers to ?Brotox?

The beauty industry is no longer for women only. In 2013, look for spas to include customized for-men ?beauty? menus ? from male waxing and threading services to man-geared cosmetic procedures. More men are having more serious ?work? done at medspas and plastic surgery offices, and have different needs than women, desiring subtle, not overdone results. We Love Men at Neroli and offer customized services and packages for all the men in your life.

Where the Jobs Are

Join an industry where hands-on skill can never be replaced. In a world of ?high-tech? replacements, the beauty industry continues to thrive as more people are willing to commit to a lifestyle of wellness and pampering. With the $2 trillion-plus wellness market continuing to grow, spas simply cannot find enough people (with the right skills) to fill spa management/director or therapist jobs with the need promising to increase year after year. Interested in starting a career in the beauty and wellness industry? Milwaukee offers a variety of local schools, including the Aveda Institute of Beauty and Wellness who will be introducing an Ayurvedic Practitioner Program in April 2013.

Supreme Court to review judge's role in plea talks

An image alleged to be of?Samsung?s (005930) upcoming Galaxy S IV smartphone was published on Friday by SamMobile. If authentic, the image reveals that Samsung will finally ditch its traditional?home and navigational buttons for on-screen keys. The bezel around the device is thinner, giving the upcoming Galaxy smartphone a near edge-to-edge display, similar to Motorola?s DROID RAZR M. The Galaxy S IV is rumored to feature a 4.99-inch Super AMOLED full HD 1920 X 1080 display, and include a 2GHz quad-core Exynos processor, 2GB of RAM and a 13-megapixel rear camera. It should be noted, however, that SamMobile could not 100% confirm that the image is authentic. The most recent rumors suggest the Galaxy S IV will be released in

Alabama ready for big-play Irish defense

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) ? When Alabama offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier sizes up the Crimson Tide's challenge in the BCS championship, it's cracking a Notre Dame team that leads the nation in scoring defense.

No. 2 Alabama will take on the top-ranked Fighting Irish on Monday night with the national title at stake. Nussmeier and key players from the Crimson Tide are speaking to reporters Thursday.

Nussmeier says what impresses him most about the Irish is that they play tough in the red zone and only give up 10 points a game. Of course, that's only a fraction of a point less than what the Tide has allowed.

Alabama QB AJ McCarron credits Nussmeier with helping him improve. McCarron notes that under the first-year coordinator he's thrown less but for more yards.

Bering Sea study finds prey density more important to predators than biomass

Jan. 3, 2013 ? Marine resource managers often gauge the health of species based on overall biomass, but a new study of predator-prey relationships in the Bering Sea found that it isn't the total number of individuals that predators care about -- it's how densely they are aggregated.

It's more than searching for an easy meal, the researchers say. Predators need to balance how much energy they expend in searching for food with the caloric and nutrient value of that which they consume. When prey doesn't aggregate, however, the search for food becomes much more difficult -- affecting the health of the predators' offspring and the vitality of their overall population.

Results of the study were published this week in the journal PLOS ONE. The study was part of the Bering Sea Integrated Ecosystem Research Project, which was funded by the North Pacific Research Board and the National Science Foundation.

"We had to think very differently about these interactions, trying to see the world from the predators' point of view," said Kelly Benoit-Bird, an Oregon State University marine ecologist and lead author on the study. "When we first tried to identify good foraging locations for predator species we looked at areas of high prey numbers because it makes sense that they'd be where the food is. But the results didn't match what we might have expected.

"Predator populations that should have been doing well, based on prey numbers or biomass, were in fact not doing well," added Benoit-Bird, an associate professor in OSU's College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences. "What we discovered is that smaller aggregations of prey are more attractive to predators if they are sufficiently dense."

The findings are particularly important, scientists say, because almost all fisheries management is based on biomass -- tons of fish -- and not how those fish may be distributed in the sea.

In their study, the researchers looked at the feeding behaviors of three co-occurring species in the Bering Sea, all of which consume juvenile pollock or krill -- black-legged kittiwakes, thick-billed murres and northern fur seals. When they attempted to find a spatial relationship between these predators and the pollock using areal biomass and numerical abundance, they found little correlation.

However, when they began finding small patches of prey at certain depths and of sufficient density, the predators were there. And though the scientists know why -- feeding efficiency -- they aren't sure how.

"To be honest, we aren't really sure how these predators -- which may travel many miles -- locate the densest aggregations at depths well below the surface -- and often at night," said Scott Heppell, a fisheries ecologist at Oregon State University and co-author on the PLOS ONE paper. "You wouldn't think murres and fur seals would have that much in common, but in this case they do."

"In a way, they're looking for the same thing that commercial fishing fleets look for -- high-quality prey in aggregations dense enough to be economical," added Heppell, an assistant professor of fisheries and wildlife at OSU.

Benoit-Bird likened the predator-prey link to locating a box of popcorn in a darkened movie theater. You may have to search for it, she noted, but if you find the popcorn box, the payoff will be much more significant than what you might get by stumbling upon individual kernels in the dark that are spread throughout the theater -- even though the number of kernels is the same.

That payoff is particularly meaningful for nurturing young, the researchers point out. During their two-year study, the research group tagged and observed female fur seals from St. Paul Island and Bogoslof Island as they swam hundreds of kilometers over a period of 1-2 weeks to gorge on nutrient-rich pollock then return to their homes to nurse pups.

They also tagged and observed adult murres and kittiwakes at St. Paul, St. George and Bogoslof Islands. The birds would capture local prey to feed their chicks during the day, but make numerous long flights at night to gorge on energy-rich, deep-water prey before returning to their nests to feed their chicks.

"It is a trade-off strategy," said Benoit-Bird, a 2010 recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship. "They feed themselves in one place and nourish their offspring from another."

This concept of prey "patchiness" can change rapidly, the researchers noted. Pollock aggregated only when the number of individuals in an area reached a certain threshold; below that threshold, they swam as individuals.

"If the population is sufficiently diffuse, the pollock don't aggregate and that could spell trouble for species that prey upon them," Heppell said. "A 10 percent shift in the number of fish could change how the entire stock behaves -- and have a major impact on the birds, seals and other predators."

Microsoft: Google is deliberately ruining YouTube on Windows Phone

5 hrs.

A Microsoft legal representative has alleged foul play on the part of Google in withholding critical YouTube components from Windows Phone, relegating users of the mobile operating system to a second-class experience of the world's most popular video site. Google denies it.

Dave Heiner,?Microsoft vice president and deputy general counsel,?wrote Wednesday on a company blog?that Google refuses to let YouTube work properly with Windows Phone, and contends that's?because Microsoft offers a competing search engine, Bing.

But is Google really withholding features? A spokesperson for the company issued the following statement to NBC News:

Contrary to Microsoft?s claims, it?s easy for consumers to view YouTube videos on Windows phones. ?Windows phone users can access all the features of YouTube through our HTML5-based mobile website, including viewing high-quality video streams, finding favorite videos, seeing video ratings, and searching for video categories. ?In fact, we?ve worked with Microsoft for several years to help build a great YouTube experience on Windows phones.

In other words, the Web?browser version is feature-complete and should suffice.?

Still, Heiner said having "proper access" to YouTube on Windows Phone is "an important issue because consumers value YouTube access on their phone," and wrote?that "just last month we learned from YouTube that?senior executives at Google told them not to enable a first-class YouTube experience on Windows Phones."

Google's spokesperson did not?answer questions on this statement directly, but did tell?NBC News that "it?s not scalable to build and support individually tailored YouTube apps for every mobile platform."

This implies that?Windows Phone may be out of luck. Heiner's comments?come?in the wake of remarks last month by a Google Apps executive who indicated that they would not be working on Windows 8 or Windows Phone apps, citing a lack of users. "We are very careful about where we invest and will go where the users are but they are not on Windows Phone or Windows 8," he told the website V3 at the time.

Perhaps Google's tune will change if Windows Phone gains more market share. But for now its focus on iOS and Android, which together represent nearly 90 percent of phones on the market.

larajhonson: Middleton family introduces royal-themed baby shower ...

You are here: Home / Pregancy And You / Middleton family introduces royal-themed baby shower products on party website

Email Print

The Middleton family party business is now selling royal-themed baby shower and first birthday products. (Party Pieces)

Are Kate Middleton?s parents trying to cash in on their daughter?s pregnancy?

Many Brits think yes, after Carole and Michael Middleton introduced new lines of baby shower and 1st birthday products on their Party Pieces website this week.

?The arrival of a first grandchild is usually a source of great celebration,? the UK?s Daily Mail reported. ?And for Carole and Michael Middleton it would appear to be a good business opportunity too.?

The royal couple announced their pregnancy earlier this month and the national news media closely followed Kate Middleton?s struggle with morning sickness that landed the Duchess of Cambridge in the hospital. Only a few weeks later, the Middleton family?s party supplies website introduced baby products emblazoned with castles and prince and princess crowns.

The ?Little Prince? and ?Little Princess? party sets?which include plates, napkins and cutlery?are described as ?suitable for American-style baby showers, christening parties or first birthday celebrations.?

This isn?t the first time the Middleton family has come under fire for selling royal-themed supplies on their website (which is thought to be profitable since the family recently purchased an estate costing 4.7 million pounds). Many Brits found items themed around the Queen?s Diamond Jubilee and the Royal Wedding tacky and inappropriate.

What do you think? Is the Middleton family crossing the line? Or are they simply running a business?

Iconia B1 looks to be Acer's latest cheap Android tablet, possibly headed to CES

Android Central

There have been a few rumblings in recent weeks around the interwebs surrounding a supposed budget tablet heading to market from Acer. According to the folks at NDTV, the Acer Iconia B1 is not only real, but is heading to India potentially before the month end for RS 7,999 ($147.) Further still, there's a chance the first public showing of the new tablet will be at CES next week in Las Vegas.

Android Central @ CES

The Iconia B1 has also -- briefly -- appeared on the Acer website, before being quickly removed. Thanks to the folks at Unwired View though, we can still view the majority of the page via Google Cache. From it, we learn that the 7 inch tablet will sport a pretty sexy looking blue band around the outside. Spec wise, we're looking at a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, a 1024x600 display, 512MB of RAM, 8GB of on-board storage with a microSD card slot and Jelly Bean. Not at all high end specs, and certainly doesn't hold a candle to the Nexus 7. But, not everyone can get the Nexus 7, or has to pay a distinct premium to get one in their country. In specific markets and the right price, Acer could be onto a good thing with the B1.
