T-Mobile USA set to merge with MetroPCS - News, Weather and ...

By JUERGEN BAETZ
Associated Press

BERLIN (AP) - Struggling cellphone companies T-Mobile USA and MetroPCS Communications are set to merge, in a deal that will create an operator with more than 40 million subscribers.

In a joint statement, the two companies said Wednesday that Deutsche Telekom AG, the owner of T-Mobile USA, will hold 74 percent of the new business, while MetroPCS's shareholders will hold the remainder, as well as receiving a payment of about $1.5 billion.

"The combined company, which will retain the T-Mobile name, will have the expanded scale, spectrum and financial resources to aggressively compete with the other national U.S. wireless carriers," the two said.

Both companies have struggled in the highly-competitive U.S. cellphone market.

And even after the combination with Dallas-based MetroPCS, which has 9.3 million subscribers, T-Mobile USA - the country's fourth-largest cellphone company with 33.2 million subscribers - will still trail the market's No. 3, Sprint Nextel Corp.

However, the deal would give T-Mobile USA, which is based in Bellevue, Washington, access to more space on the airwaves, a critical factor as cellphone carriers try to expand their capacity for wireless broadband.

Last year, AT&T struck a deal to buy T-Mobile USA for $39 billion for much the same reason. That was shot down by regulators, who believed competition would suffer if the second-largest cellphone company were to gobble up the fourth-largest.

"We are committed to creating a sustainable and financially viable national challenger in the U.S., and we believe this combination helps us deliver on that commitment," Deutsche Telekom chief executive officer Rene Obermann said.

Deutsche Telekom said the combined company would have revenues of around $24.8 billion based on analysts' estimates, and cost synergies are expected to be worth $6 to $7 billion.

The deal still has to be agreed by shareholders and will require regulatory approval.

The regulatory concerns this time round appear set to be much milder than the proposed deal involving AT&T. Both companies are relatively small, and T-Mobile USA has been losing subscribers for the last two years.

A linkup would be complicated by the fact that MetroPCS and T-Mobile USA use different network technologies. That means MetroPCS phones would not work on T-Mobile USA's network, and vice versa. However, both companies are deploying the same "fourth-generation" or "4G" technology, so they're on a path to harmonizing their networks.

Deutsche Telekom's CEO Obermann said the new company will have the "resources to expand its geographic coverage, broaden choice among all types of customers and continue to innovate, especially around the next-generation LTE network."

Germany's stock market was closed Wednesday because of a national holiday. But the prospect of seeing Deutsche Telekom finding a solution for its struggling U.S. business sent the stock higher Tuesday after both companies had confirmed their talks.

MetroPCS' shares shot up some 20 percent to $14.16 in New York on Tuesday.

Internet Promotion Advice That Everyone Should Know | How To ...

Internet promotion is actually quite interesting. For every business model, there are so very many possibilities that can be used and tweaked. While this is exciting, it can also be stressful for the Internet marketing beginner. This article will help you.

It is important to not only gain your clients? trust, but keep it. When you design promotional material, only include information that can be backed up with facts. Make sure that you have the documentation necessary to back up test results, endorsements, and testimonials.

Offer people a guarantee when you market your products on the Internet. This reassures customers and makes them more likely to make a purchase. You can experiment by offering different guarantees on different products, and see what works for you. A lifetime or 90-day guarantee is most common. Depending on the quality of your product, you should choose the guarantee that will provide confidence without destroying your profits.

Use social networking sites, like Facebook or MySpace, to target a specific market. Be careful sending spam that people don?t want since MySpace has been taking some people to court to stop it.

Your website should have good format and make links clear and easily spotted. This will give your viewers an easier time as they view your site.

You always have to have the evidence ready to back up any claims that you make in your marketing efforts. People are justifiably skeptical of what they read on the Internet. You will come off much more credible if you provide references, guarantees, studies and testimonials. If you are making glib statements that do not hold water, customers will pass you up for someone who is credible.

A squeeze page is a great way to build a contact list. Its purpose is to solicit email addresses from potential customers. You may even want to offer a freebie or special offer when a visitor shares their email address. This provides them with something free and you can add them without any issues to your own list.

Provide a button that allows others to quickly and easily links back to your site. People that think alike will click it and your site will be linked to theirs, this will guarantee that your link will be visible to them.

A client mailing list is vital. Ask your customers if they would like to join your email list when they make a purchase, and add a form on your website to let them sign up. This data can be used later to market your business, or for quality control purposes.

You should advertise if you want to start to get yourself visible on the Internet. Early on, you rely entirely on your advertising to bring potential customers to your site. This helps you gain customers that you may not have gotten using other methods.

If you sell products on your website, you must find a trustworthy third-party to make sure your transactions are secure. Research online and ask others in your niche, how they handle security matters. Verisign, McAfee, etc. protect both the vender and the customer. Although security systems are expensive, they are necessary to protect both the customer and the company.

Producing online videos that include tags can help your online marketing campaign succeed. Within the video?s description, be sure to include a link to your website. This can help boost the number of visitors on your site regularly.

One strategy in running a successful internet business is by checking out your competition. Analyze the other websites and identify what improvements could be made to them. Differentiate your website by highlighting products or services that are not available on others.

Use keywords that link to other areas on your site. One of your biggest goals should be to make sure people spend time on your site. Offer links to other content you have previously provided. Internal links can not only keep your visitors? attention, but also make it easier for search engines to index your site.

Start a reward system. Customer retention is a very valuable asset, and if you are generous to them, they will be more likely to return. This strategy will generate word of mouth marketing that will benefit you.

Make sure your site comes up on Google searches. Thousands of people search Google every day, and you want them to find your site. Google has a wide range of directories and listing options. Use them to your advantage.

Do research to discover which Internet promotion methods have been successful in your industry. Website marketing offers many customizable options which can seem overwhelming. The tips listed here should make it easier for you to choose

Official: Hezbollah fighters killed in Syria

BEIRUT (AP) ? A Hezbollah commander and several other fighters from the Lebanese Shiite militant group have been killed in Syria, a senior Lebanese security official and Syrian activists said Tuesday.

Hezbollah, which is backed by both Syria and Iran, is a strong ally of President Bashar Assad's embattled regime and has long been accused by the Syrian opposition of assisting Damascus in its crackdown on the 18-month-old uprising ? a claim the group has repeatedly denied.

The security official said Hezbollah commander Ali Hussein Nassif's body was returned to Lebanon through the Masnaa border crossing on Sunday. Speaking on condition of anonymity in line with regulations, he said several other Hezbollah fighters bodies have been brought back to Lebanon in the past few days.

It was not immediately clear how the militants were killed or whether they had been fighting alongside the Syrian army.

Samer al-Homsi, an activist in Syria's central Homs province, which borders Lebanon, said Nassif was killed Saturday when a roadside bomb hit the car he was riding in near the town of Qusair. He said Nassif and several other people were killed in the blast that also damaged the vehicle.

"His job was to coordinate with Syrian security agencies," al-Homsi said via Skype. He added that the rebels detonated the bomb "without knowing" that the target was a Hezbollah official.

"We knew he was a Hezbollah official after it was announced by the group in Lebanon," he said.

Al-Homsi's account could not be independently verified.

Hezbollah's reputation has suffered severely for siding with the Assad regime even after supporting revolts in Egypt, Tunisia, Libya and Bahrain. Confirmation that the group's members are fighting alongside the regime in the Syrian civil war would likely stoke resentment against the group among many Syrians and Lebanese who fear the conflict would mutate into a wider regional conflict that would pull in Lebanon because of Hezbollah's involvement.

Lebanon's sectarian tensions have already been worsened by the crisis in Syria, where the overwhelmingly Sunni opposition is struggling to oust a regime dominated by Alawites, an offshoot of Shiite Islam.

Hezbollah's newspaper al-Intiqad said Nassif, who is also known as Abu Abbas, was a Hezbollah commander and was killed "while performing his jihadi duties." It did not say when or where he was killed.

His funeral, which was held Sunday in the eastern town of Budai, near Baalbek in Lebanon's eastern Bekaa Valley, was attended by top Hezbollah officials including the head of the group's judicial council, Sheik Mohammed Yazbek, and the head of the political bureau, Sheik Ibrahim Amin al-Sayed.

On Tuesday, Hezbollah's Al-Manar TV showed the funerals of at least two other Hezbollah members it said were killed while performing their "jihadi duty."

It said one of the group's members, Zein al-Abideen Mustafa, was buried in his hometown of Baalbek, while another Hezbollah member, Hussein Mohammed Hussein Diab, was buried in his hometown of Ghassaniyeh in southern Lebanon. Both funerals were attended by Hezbollah officials and commanders.

The coffins of the dead were draped with Hezbollah's yellow flags and carried by militants in black uniforms and red berets. Hundreds of people marched in the funeral.

Hezbollah spokesman Ibrahim Moussawi confirmed the deaths but said he had no further information on where or how Nassif was killed. He declined further comment.

6 crew arrested in deadly Hong Kong boat collision

HONG KONG (AP) ? Hong Kong police on Tuesday arrested six crew members from the two boats involved in a collision that killed at least 37 people in Hong Kong's deadliest accident in more than a decade.

Police Commissioner Tsang Wai-hung said crew members from both boats were detained on suspicion of endangering passengers by operating the craft unsafely, but he provided no other details.

Salvage crews were raising the Lamma IV, which sank after colliding with a ferry Monday night as it carried partygoers to a fireworks show celebrating China's national day. A body found aboard the vessel Tuesday afternoon raised the death toll to 37.

More than 100 people from the party boat were rescued and sent to hospitals. The ferry was damaged but completed its journey, and some of its passengers were treated for injuries.

The ferry collided with a boat owned by utility company Power Assets Holdings Ltd., which was taking its workers and their families to famed Victoria Harbor to watch a fireworks display in celebration of China's National Day and mid-autumn festival.

Police didn't know the exact number of people aboard the boat at the time of the accident and were interviewing survivors to determine if others were missing. Hong Kong Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying has ordered a full investigation.

There was no immediate word about how Monday night's collision occurred on the tightly regulated waterways of one of Asia's safest places, although it appeared human error was involved. The evening was clear and both vessels should have been illuminated by running lights when they crashed near Lamma island off the southwestern coast of Hong Kong island.

Survivors told local television stations that the power company boat started sinking rapidly after the 8:23 p.m. collision. One woman said she swallowed a lot of water as she swam back to shore. A man said he had been on board with his children and didn't know where they were. Neither gave their names.

(AP) ? Amnesty International on Tuesday took Egypt's new president to task for failing to address the "bloody legacy" of abuses by security forces committed under military rule after the fall of Hosni Mubarak, which continue even after the establishment of the country's first freely elected government.

The group urged President Mohammed Morsi to hold the military accountable for the killing, torture and sexual abuse of protesters during the 18 months when the generals held power after Mubarak's February 2011 ouster.

It also said Morsi should rein in police forces, which it said still use excessive force to deal with protests and have tortured detainees. It called for the government to allow U.N. experts to investigate and assess how to deal with the problems.

Unless there is a clear political will to confront this and to provide the families of the victims with truth and justice, things are not going to change," Hassiba Hadj Sahraoui, deputy director for Amnesty's Middle East and North Africa Program, told The Associated Press.

"For the moment police officers, soldiers are confident that they can commit violations with impunity without ever having to answer for any of their acts," she said.

Two extensive reports released by the London-based human rights group in Cairo on Tuesday detailed cases of rights abuses by the army and police, focusing on six separate incidents of crackdowns on protests that killed at least 120 people. Amnesty said thousands of protesters were injured or maimed ? with documented cases of loss of eyesight ? during the crackdowns, and that detainees were tortured in custody.

Most of the crackdowns took place during the post-Mubarak period of rule by a council of generals, during which soldiers had a major role in keeping security inside the country. The military has largely backed down from that role ever since Morsi, of the Muslim Brotherhood, was inaugurated at the end of June as the new president

But Morsi's failure to seek accountability from the police and military for those abuses has only fueled a culture of impunity that is allowing violations to continue, Amnesty warned. One of the Amnesty documented cases of violent crackdown by the police against protesters took place after Morsi came to power in August, in which one was killed.

Karim Ennarah, a researcher with the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights who spoke at a press conference by Amnesty on Tuesday, said it appeared that police abuses are getting worse in the three months since Morsi came to power.

He cited the deaths of two people last month in the town of Meit Ghamr, outside Cairo. One was tortured in a police station, including being beaten in the head by a rifle butt, and then died before getting to a hospital. The second person was then killed when police opened fire with live ammunition on a crowd angered by the first man's death.

"The police is acting as if it is an armed gang. It lost control and is trying to regain it by resorting to excessive force," Ennarah said.

In its reports, Amnesty said the country's new leadership must "tackle the bloody legacy of official abuse and guarantee that no one is above the law in Egypt."

Security abuse and flagrant human rights violations were among the sparks that ignited the uprising against Mubarak. Thousands took to the streets initially to protest a young man's brutal death by police beating in 2010.

After Mubarak's regime was ousted in the popular uprising and the army took over, protesters increasingly denounced the military for its excessive use of force, for targeting women protesters, beatings and sexual abuse ? including the notorious "virginity tests" that female detainees were forced to go through after being taken into custody by soldiers.

Amnesty noted that at least 12,000 civilians, mainly protesters, have been tried before military tribunals while only three soldiers and a military doctor have faced a military court over abuse of authority. And only one security officer was brought to trial for killing and injuring protesters in one of the six documented cases.

"The only thing we have done (since the uprising) is lose our sons. That's it," said Mary Daniel, the sister of a protester killed last year during a military crackdown on rally. "We have gone from bad to worse."

Amnesty said the army's response to protests was "disproportionate," citing cases when live ammunition was fired as demonstrators lobbed stones or firebombs at the troops. It also cited incidents of army vehicles running down groups of protesters, in one case killing several demonstrators.

Amnesty quoted one protester, Wael Saber Bshay, whose brother was crushed by a military armored personnel carrier during an Oct. 9, 2011 protest that killed 27 people, mostly Coptic Christians.

"We were in a state of shock that the army, which is supposed to protect us ... attacked us," Bshay told Amnesty. "If we were in a state of war with an enemy, I don't think this would have happened."

The Amnesty report also documented that Egypt continued to receive deliveries of small arms and equipment from abroad, including from its largest supplier the United States, despite the violent crackdowns.

In one case, the report said, a U.S. shipment believed to contain tear gas was dispatched to Egypt on Oct. 13, 2011, just days after the protest by the Christians was crushed. Another shipment from the U.S. arrived days after a November protest in which nearly 50 people were killed, Amnesty reported.

The group said authorities should allow visits by the U.N.'s special rapporteur on torture and the U.N. working group on arbitrary detention and torture, whose requests for visits were ignored by the Mubarak regime.

For abuses to halt, those responsible must be brought to trial before an independent, civilian court, said Suzanne Nossel, the executive director of Amnesty International USA.

"If President Morsi truly wants to reform Egypt, he must establish the principle that no one can be above the law, including the army and the security services," Nossel said. "Without accountability by the army and security forces who are responsible for decades of human rights violations, justice for victims will remain elusive."

Amnesty said it has yet to receive a response from Morsi for a memorandum it had sent to him on the day he was sworn in, in which it details how Egypt can address the history of human rights and open a new page.

"This is disappointing," said Saharoui.
