The Duration Of The Effects Of Alcohol Withdrawal

Substance abuse is the most common problem faced by many countries nowadays. This is a serious problem for the sufferer, both mentally and physically. The sufferer's body now depends on alcohol and demanding for more of it. The effects of substance abuse can range from a couple of days or weeks. This may also cause mild effects or may also cause death. If these effects occur it is better to seek help from a rehabilitation center.

The most common substance that is used nowadays is alcohol, because it is not prohibited by countries all over the globe, that is why it is used repeatedly and at a large scale. As a person who continuously consume alcohol, this might effect to mood swings, change his lifestyle, changes in personality and rebellion on parents. This might also cause him to skip classes or workplaces. The body will also undergo different changes. The first change will be the damage on the liver, skin dries and eyes turn red.

Withdrawal symptoms can be a life threatening this might cause death to an individual because of the abuse of alcohol. There would be a huge effect on the seriousness of the symptoms and treatment will defer in length of time and the amount of alcohol he usually consumed. The patient might experience lots of discomfort physically when he abruptly stops the consumption of alcohol. The symptoms that will be experienced by the sufferer will last for almost 48 hours and might get serious as the time goes by, but as what is stated above, the treatment will differ depending on the severity of the addiction of the individual.

Alcohol Rehabilitation Centers are offering various kinds of treatment for drug addicts. These clinics will be able to help sufferers during their withdrawals; they will provide the right medication and the right treatment for the patient. Sufferers who don't want to go to the in-patient programs or also known as residential treatment programs are given medications for anti-anxiety.

Mild effects will include nausea, headache, shakes, sweats or night sweats, anxiety, rapid heart beat and also high blood pressure. As time goes by the effects will get serious and it usually starts in hallucinations. But there is a possibility that he may also experience seizures and convulsions.

Troops, students, teachers to fill Olympic seats

LONDON ? Troops, teachers and students are getting free tickets to fill prime seats that were empty at some Olympic venues on the first full day of competition.

Organizing chief Sebastian Coe answered widespread criticism Sunday by predicting that seats left unused, largely by Olympic and sports officials, will not be an issue as the games proceed.

?It is obvious, some of those seats are not being used in the early rounds,? he said at a briefing.

He declined to blame Olympic sponsors, whom he had earlier promised to ?name and shame? if they did not use their allocations. Sponsors, including Coca-Cola and Visa, defended their use of allotted tickets ? 8 percent of the 8.8 million available tickets.

The issue is sensitive for Olympic organizers and British sports fans after hundreds of thousands of people failed to get tickets in an initial public ballot.

?There is not a single person who thinks it is shambolic,? Coe insisted, adding no one would object to free tickets for military personnel who ?stepped up to the mark? this month to help solve a security staffing crisis at venues.

Coe?s organizing team has long promised to fill venues and avoid a similar problem from the Beijing Olympics.

He said he was ?jammed in shoulder to shoulder? with Olympic officials to see swimming finals ? including the first Ryan Lochte-Michael Phelps duel ? on Saturday evening. He also pointed to record crowds lining the men?s road race route, and for rowing events at Eton Dorney.

?Those venues are stuffed to the gunnels. The public are in there,? Coe said.

Yet broadcast images of signature Olympic events, such as gymnastics and swimming, revealed rows of empty seats for qualifying rounds Saturday. Tennis at Wimbledon?s Centre Court was sparsely attended just weeks after the Grand Slam event sold out.

Army personnel attended gymnastics sessions Sunday morning at North Greenwich Arena during down time from security duties.

?There are a whole bunch of the military actually sitting in those seats at the moment. We can and we have moved them in there,? Coe said.

Students and teachers from east London neighborhoods also would get late calls for free tickets, having already been accredited in a planned reallocation program. Some ticket holders will get upgrades inside venues, Coe said.

Some blame for the opening day embarrassment was falling on ?accredited people,? including the Olympic family, athletes, and some sponsors and media, organizers said.

Coe said it was typical at Olympics for sports and national team officials to be ?dragged to any number of venues,? and be too busy to attend events in the opening days. ?I don?t think you will be seeing this as an issue long term during the games.?

He went on to defend sponsors, whose legal rights to protect their brand at the Olympics often fuel criticism.

Late Night at C&O | Mas to Millers | Charlottesville Restaurant Reviews

Pastrami, swiss, and horseradish panini at C&O Restaurant in Charlottesville, VAFor most people out and about past a certain hour in the evening, the inevitable late-night snack attack hits. The Corner does a fair job of catering to the ravenous college set, what with Christian?s special hours at its 14th Street and West Main location. But what are the options for good food downtown after 9 o?clock, especially in settings where more fun ? and alcohol ? are still to be had?

The C&O, one of Charlottesville?s most venerable fine dining restaurants, offers a fairly extensive late-night menu to meet almost any bargoer?s cravings. Especially gourmet ones ? pizza and burgers do not make the cut here, folks, so revisit the Corner if necessary. C&O?s menu includes paninis, cheese and charcuterie plates, comforting small plates, and desserts. Their drink menu is, as ever, extensive and inventive. My boyfriend and I went on a Wednesday night for a late dinner and a couple drinks. He ordered a trusty draft beer favorite. I ordered the Goosehound, which was rocket fuel-strong and pulpy with fresh-squeezed grapefruit.

I had difficulty choosing between the relatively famous mac & cheese plate and the equally loved vegetable soup, but chose a cup of the latter while my boyfriend ordered a pastrami and swiss panini, served with a small salad. After the first sip, I completely understood what all the fuss was about. The seemingly straightforward vegetable soup revealed itself to be brothy and deeply-hued, with generous chunks of carrots, celery, mushrooms, and tomatoes. The mushrooms added a meaty richness, while the flecks of herbs enhanced the vegetal favor. The soup was served with the requisite Albemarle Baking Company baton, perfect for sopping up any leftover broth.

Peach cobbler at C&O Restaurant in Charlottesville, VAOne could only imagine how perfect the pastrami panini, plus that soup, would taste on a cool fall night. Thinly-sliced pastrami, combined with an oozing horseradish aioli that brought out the melted creaminess of the Swiss, was sandwiched between two buttered and pressed slices of grilled bread. The accompanying salad was a bit dry. While the Pommery mustard dressing was flavorful and bright, I found the lettuce in need of a better coating.

The only real let-down of our meal was the peach cobbler. The cakey rather than biscuity topping was appealing and different, but its cloying sweetness and the relative lack of peaches made for an overly saccharine and sticky finish to an otherwise delicious meal.

The C&O?s first-floor bar area, with its wood beams and cozy lighting, is a warm, comforting spot for a late-night drink or meal. Be on the watch for rowdy crowds or slightly less stellar presentation than one would receive at the same restaurant during normal dinner hours. Otherwise, the menu and the space itself offer one heck of a late night experience.

Jed says: ?No matter how many new kids there are on the block, C&O is an old favorite, especially for the occasional drink and bite downstairs.?

Last year at this time, the creators of How I Met Your Mother were heading into season 7 -- and talking about ending the show after season 8. If they stuck to that plan, we'd find out the lucky lady's identity this coming May! Hallejullah!

Learning About Marriage The Hard Way | Psychology Today

A provocative new book by University of Michigan's Terri Orbuch, Ph.D. called Finding Love Again: 6 Simple Steps to a New and Happy Relationship, is based on the long-term NIH funded study "Early Years of Marriage Project" that studied couples between the ages of 25 and 37 who were in their first year of marriage in 1986. Since then 46 percent of these couples have divorced and 70 percent of those who divorced are in new relationships including over 40 percent who have remarried.

The study showed that one the?most significant hurdles in first marriages is money issues. That's something that needs to be addressed early in a relationships instead of hoping it will take care of itself after the couple has committed completely to one another.?The study showed it?is a major compatibility issue with over 50 percent saying it strained their marriage.

The study also showed that divorced couples who held a grudge against their ex seemed less likely to find relationships over time. Obviously new potential partners don't like to hear how they compare to the previous spouse. It's also much more attractive? to make your peace with bitterness and anger and have something?positive ?to share with?the new person in your life.

Ms. Orbuch found? that "husbands who reported that their wives noticed them and made them feel special were very happy" and were two times less likely to divorce than those husbands who didn't receive regular positive affirmation. This makes sense because a wife that is happy with the relationship will continue to show it outwardly. Once a wife sours on her husband she will usually?physically withdraw.

Sonya Rhodes, a marriage a family psychotherapist and author of Second Honeymoon: A Pioneering Guide To Reviving the Midlife Crisis, observed the damaging effect?a poor relationship has on the?physical aspect of a marriage. She observed through her years of clinical therapy that women tend to see sex as a natural result of a healthy relationship, while men consider sexual relations unconnected to the interpersonal aspect of the marriage or cohabitation. When a marriage is ailing, the sexual relations will tend to be withheld by the woman, while a married man "wants to have sex even when the relationship is under stress.

This finding of Ms. Orbuch's group about women making their man feel special was a?symptom of a happy marriage. The big question everyone wants to know is: how does one get there? It's nice to have tips like this book gives out, but if you use physical attraction, charm and approval seeking to conjure up a relationship with a stranger, it isn't very likely that you will be talking about how to handle finances until you are already physically and emotionally committed to one another. Then you may discover you have bonded with a person who is?addicted to shopping, likes to gamble away their paycheck?or refuses to compromise on financial matters.?Likewise, women who discover they married a man who pretended to be Prince Charming but is?actually a big frog are not likely to be offering up positive affirmations. ??

Twitter backlash for NBC, but record TV audience

LOS ANGELES -- NBC on Sunday announced more record audiences for its prime-time TV coverage of the London Olympics, even as the Twitterverse erupted in complaints about the U.S. network's online streaming efforts and delays in broadcasting key competitions.

Contributions to the Twitter hashtags #NBCfail and #NBCsucks surged on Sunday, with many posters complaining about the quality of NBCUniversal's online platform, which promised to show every sporting contest live for those unwilling to wait hours for the network's main primetime coverage of the day's events.

"you suck! I can't stream anything because your website is broken. It even verified directtv account, just to tease me. #NBCFail" read a posting to #NBCfail on Sunday by Twitter user Beth Hodgson.

Others complained about the plethora of ads interrupting NBC's coverage across multiple broadcast and cable outlets, and commentary by some of the NBC anchors.

"Finally got @nbcolympics live stream working online only to find it full of ads & streaming issues," Cindy Gallop said on Twitter.

NBC top sports executives were in London and could not be reached for comment on Sunday because of the time difference with the United States. But NBC Olympics producer Jim Bell took to Twitter to respond briefly to some of the gripes early on Sunday.

"Coverage on both net & cables a mix of tape and live events. Yesterday nearly 40 hours of live Oly sports on television btw," Bell tweeted.

Despite the grumbling, NBC said on Sunday that a record 28.7 million U.S. viewers watched its primetime coverage on Saturday's first day of competition, when popular swimmer Michael Phelps was shut out of the medals for the first time in years.

NBC said Saturday's evening audience was 2 million more than watched the first day of competition during the Atlanta Olympics in 1996. An average 12.3 million U.S. viewers watched the Olympics on television on Saturday morning - a 56 percent increase over the Saturday daytime audience for Beijing in 2008, the network said.

NBCUniversal, which is majority owned by cable operator Comcast Corp, paid $1.18 billion for the U.S. rights to broadcast the London Games, and has won $1 billion in advertising for its Olympic broadcasts over the next three weeks.

It is planning an unprecedented 5,500 hours of cover across its cable and free-to-air outlets, and its NBCOlympics.com website -- more than double the hours devoted to the Beijing Games.

NBC drew a record 40.7 million U.S. television audience for Friday's opening ceremony from London, despite complaints that Americans had to wait for up to seven hours to watch the ceremony.

Those wanting to watch online must have an account with a cable television or satellite provider, or download an app from NBC. According to the Nielsen company, about 90 percent of Americans subscribe to either cable or satellite services.

Not everyone was unhappy with NBC's efforts however.

"I'm watching tons of live events on NBC's Olympics app. I don't understand the #nbcfail nagging. Bonus: No commentary, just game sound!" Twitter user Mtolander posted on Sunday.

Brad Adgate, media analyst for Horizon Media in New York, told Reuters on Sunday: "Whatever NBC does they will receive criticism, especially in the Social Media Olympics, you can't please everyone. TV though remains the big ad revenue producer and they paid 1.18 billion dollars, so what do you expect?"

Adgate said the strong ratings for the London games were surprising, especially for an Olympics outside the United States.

"It's one thing to run ahead of Beijing, but quite another to be running ahead of Atlanta," Adgate said.

Panetta: Syria's Assad hastening his own demise

TUNIS, Tunisia - Syrian President Bashar Assad's use of helicopter gunships to counter a civil uprising will prove to be "a nail in Assad's coffin," U.S. Defence Secretary Leon Panetta said Sunday at the outset of a five-day Mideast tour.

While giving no indication that the Obama administration is contemplating military intervention, Panetta said it is increasingly clear that the Syrian crisis is deepening and that Assad is hastening his own demise.

"If they continue this kind of tragic attack on their own people ... I think it ultimately will be a nail in Assad's coffin," Panetta told reporters travelling with him from Washington. "His regime is coming to an end."

Panetta said he would use his meetings in Tunisia, Egypt, Israel and Jordan to reinforce an international consensus that Assad must step down and allow a peaceful transition to a democratic form of government.

He said he also will continue consultations on efforts to ensure that Syria's stockpiles of chemical weapons do not fall into the wrong hands.

Panetta will be in Israel just days after U.S. Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney, who has cast the Obama administration as too soft on Iran and insufficiently supportive of the Jewish state.

In a speech in Jerusalem Sunday, Romney said the United States has "a solemn duty and a moral imperative" to block Iran from achieving nuclear weapons capability. He steered clear of overt criticism of President Barack Obama, even though he said the threat of a nuclear-armed Iran "has only become worse" in the past five years.

Panetta declined to respond. "I'm just not going to get into that game of commenting on what candidates do," he said.

Panetta said he believes Israeli leaders still support an international campaign of economic, political and diplomatic pressure on Iran to prevent Tehran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.

"My view is that they have not made any decisions with regards to" attacking Iran, he said.

While in Israel, Panetta planned to visit an air defence battery that uses technology developed in part with U.S. support to shoot down short-range rockets. Israel has suffered thousands of rocket attacks from Hezbollah militants in Lebanon and Hamas forces in the Gaza Strip in recent years.

The air defence system, called Iron Dome, has been an important success and serves to deter attacks from Iranian proxies, Panetta said.

He called Iron Dome an example of expanded U.S.-Israeli co-operation.

"We have achieved a level of defenceco-operation that is unprecedented in our history," Panetta said. "And my goal is to deepen that relationship even further."

This is Panetta's first visit to Tunis as defence secretary. The country was the launching pad for the wave of revolt that swept through the Arab world in 2011. It had been one of the most repressive governments in the region, while maintaining friendly relations with Washington.

Tunisia's uprising began in December 2010 when a fruit vendor, Mohammed Bouazizi, set himself on fire in the town of Sidi Bouzid to protest his lack of economic opportunity and the disrespect of the police.

Tunisia's new government is led by the moderate Islamist Ennahda Party, which had been banned under the previous government.

Seattle, federal officials agree to police reforms

SEATTLE (AP) ? Seattle officials agreed to an independent monitor and court oversight of the city's police department as part of an agreement announced Friday with the Justice Department following a damning report that found officers routinely used excessive force.

City and federal negotiators were involved in tense talks over the scope of a deal for months, and Justice Department lawyers had threatened to sue the city if a deal was not reached by July 31.

"It's no secret there were a few bumps in the road to get here," Mayor Mike McGinn said. "We do have a lot of work in front of us."

The Justice Department launched its civil rights investigation early last year after the fatal shooting of a homeless, Native American woodcarver and other incidents involving force used against minority suspects. In December, a DOJ report found officers were too quick to reach for weapons, such as flashlights and batons, even when arresting people for minor offenses.

The agreement was announced at City Hall by McGinn, Jennifer Durkan, U.S. attorney for Seattle, and Thomas Perez, the Justice Department's chief civil rights enforcer.

The deal also calls for a special commission, appointed by the mayor, to concentrate on use of force issues.

Talks between Seattle officials and the Justice Department had been hung up after city officials initially balked at some federal proposals for reform.

The settlement, which must be approved by a federal judge, requires the Seattle Police Department to revise use of force policies and enhance training, reporting, investigation and supervision for situations involving use force. Police also would have to change policies and training concerning "bias-free" policing and stops, and create a Community Police Commission, which would be a civilian oversight body.

Court oversight would continue for five years, but the city could ask to end the scrutiny earlier if it has complied with the agreements for two years.

"This city is committed to eliminating bias," McGinn said.

Perez said the agreement could serve as a way to help reduce crime and increase public confidence in the city's police officers.

"We must continue to be well aware of the very raw feelings that many Seattle residents continue to have toward the Seattle Police Department," Perez said.

Surveillance cameras and police-cruiser videos had captured officers beating civilians, including stomping on a prone Latino man who was mistakenly thought to be a robbery suspect, and an officer kicking a non-resisting black youth in a convenience store.

The earlier Justice Department report found that force was used unconstitutionally one out of every five times an officer resorted to it. The department failed to adequately review the use of force and lacked policies and training related to the use of force, it said.

The American Civil Liberties Union and other community groups called for scrutiny of the department after a Seattle officer shot and killed the woodcarver, John T. Williams, in 2010.

Video from Officer Ian Birk's patrol car showed Williams crossing the street holding a piece of wood and a small knife, and Birk exiting the vehicle to pursue him. Off-camera, Birk quickly shouted three times for Williams to drop the knife then fired five shots. The knife was found folded at the scene, but Birk later maintained Williams had threatened him. Birk resigned from the force and was not charged. A review board found the shooting unjustified.

Seattle Councilman Tim Burgess, a former city police officer, said the agreement was a good one.

The fact that a federal judge and federal monitor will be involved was key, Burgess said. "That will provide the muscle behind the reforms that will be necessary," he said.

Doug Honig, spokesman for the ACLU of Washington, was also pleased.

"The city and the DOJ appear to have taken our concerns about excessive force, racially biased policing and flaws in the oversight system seriously," Honig said. "The implementation is what's going to matter."

Since the beginning of 2010, the Justice Department's civil rights division has previously reached settlements to reform police practices in New Orleans and in Warren, Ohio.

It has sued the Maricopa County, Ariz., sheriff's office and the East Haven, Conn., police department for a pattern and practice of discrimination against Latinos and Hispanics. It is also investigating the Newark, N.J., police department for a pattern and practice of excessive force and unconstitutional stops, searches, arrests and seizures, and discriminatory policing; the Miami, Fla., police department and the Portland, Ore., Police Bureau over patterns of excessive deadly force; and Missoula, Mont., police over handling of sexual assault cases.

US Air Force looks to train pilots for hi-tech threats

For over a decade US fighter pilots have become accustomed to "owning the sky" in wars against insurgents who have no air defenses, but now the air force is trying to get back to basics reminding pilots how to fly against a sophisticated enemy.

In the desert outside Las Vegas, the US Air Force is reminding pilots how to fly against an enemy with fighter jets, surface-to-air missiles and satellite jammers.

Traditional combat skills have gotten "a little rusty," said Steve Imonti, a former fighter pilot who helps oversee simulated air battles out of Nellis Air Force Base.

If a pilot goes three years or more without attending the "red flag" mock battles at Nellis, "then you see that rust really start to build up," said Imonti, director of programs and evaluation for the 414th Combat Training Squadron.

American pilots have become adept at precision air strikes in Iraq and Afghanistan, with a handful of planes circling over a single target after receiving a call for air power from troops on the ground.

With the United States withdrawing most of its combat troops from Afghanistan by the end of 2014, senior commanders are anxious for crews to train for operations other than close air support, officials said.

Military leaders want pilots from all the services to spend more time training for large-scale assaults in a "contested environment," where US air superiority is not a given and where batteries of anti-aircraft missiles pose a lethal threat.

"When we pull out of Afghanistan, we will have an increase here" at Nellis, said Colonel Chip Thompson, chief of the vast range just north of Las Vegas where the red flag exercises take place.

"The goal is, I want every lieutenant within his first two years to go to a red flag," he said, instead of the current average of about three years. "So that when you go to war, you've seen it before."

At red flag, pilots on a "blue team" face off against a hostile "red" fleet of fighters that employ tactics drawn from intelligence reports on Iran, China and other potential adversaries.

Instead of insurgents equipped with AK-47s and roadside bombs, the red team is well-armed, with an array of simulated surface-to-air missiles and the ability to jam radar, disrupt radio communications and disable computer networks at a command center.

Although officers insist the red side represents a generic enemy, the scenarios and targets often closely resemble real world armies, particularly Iran.

The red flag exercises started in 1975 after American pilots suffered heavy losses in Vietnam, where the "kill ratio" was 2:1, much worse than in previous conflicts.

Senior officers decided pilots needed more realistic training that would convey the intensity of aerial combat, as statistics showed if airmen could survive their first 10 sorties, their chances of survival dramatically improved.

"When you're flying around and you look over and see a smoke trail coming at you, it's OK to have your pucker factor as long as it occurs at red flag," said Lieutenant Colonel Brian Morrison, deputy commander of the 57th Adversary Tactics Group.

"So that when it actually happens in combat, you're saying, 'I've been there and done this,'" he said.

After the end of the Cold War, the red flag exercises were scaled back, and drills held at bases overseas were scrapped.

But the exercise got a new lease on life starting in 2005, with the Air Force adding mock surface-to-air missiles (SAM) and space and cyber warfare units.

At this month's red flag, young US pilots, along with crews from the United Arab Emirates and Colombia, woke every day to a briefing on a daunting new mission involving dozens of aircraft, including F-15 and F-16 fighters, B-1 and B-52 bombers, A-10 ground attack planes, aerial refueling tankers, unmanned drones and early warning radar aircraft.

In day and night time battles, they faced off against US pilots flying F-15 and F-16 fighter jets painted in camouflage resembling the patterns on Russian warplanes.

The red team pilots are part of dedicated "aggressor" squadrons that work full-time at emulating tactics of potential enemies, based on the latest intelligence analysis from spy agencies.

Commanders are also increasingly adding simulated underground targets to red flag scenarios, officials said, training pilots on techniques that might be required if the United States moves to take out buried nuclear sites in North Korea or Iran.

"Underground targets are becoming more of a factor, especially with Iran, North Korea scenarios," Thompson said. "These are very hard to find, hard to destroy."

Officials: Ebola breaks out in Uganda

KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) ? The deadly Ebola virus has killed 14 people in western Uganda this month, Ugandan health officials said on Saturday, ending weeks of speculation about the cause of a strange disease that had many people fleeing their homes.

The officials and a World Health Organization representative told a news conference in Kampala Saturday that there is "an outbreak of Ebola" in Uganda.

"Laboratory investigations done at the Uganda Virus Research Institute...have confirmed that the strange disease reported in Kibaale is indeed Ebola hemorrhagic fever," the Ugandan government and WHO said in joint statement.

Kibaale is a district in midwestern Uganda, where people in recent weeks have been troubled by a mysterious illness that seemed to have come from nowhere. Ugandan health officials had been stumped as well, and spent weeks conducting laboratory tests that were at first inconclusive.

On Friday, Joaquim Saweka, the WHO representative in Uganda, told The Associated Press that investigators were "not so sure" it was Ebola, and a Ugandan health official dismissed the possibility of Ebola as merely a rumor. It appears firm evidence of Ebola was clinched overnight.

Health officials told reporters in Kampala that the 14 dead were among 20 reported with the disease. Two of the infected have been isolated for examination by researchers and health officials. A clinical officer and, days later, her 4-month-old baby died from the disease caused by the Ebola virus, officials said.

Officials urged Ugandans to be calm, saying a national emergency taskforce had been set up to stop the disease from spreading far and wide.

There is no cure or vaccine for Ebola, and in Uganda, where in 2000 the disease killed 224 people and left hundreds more traumatized, it resurrects terrible memories. There have been isolated cases since, such as in 2007 when an outbreak of a new strain of Ebola killed at least 37 people in Bundibugyo, a remote district close to the Congolese border, but none as deadly as in 2000.

Ebola, which manifests itself as a hemorrhagic fever, is highly infectious and kills quickly. It was first reported in 1976 in Congo and is named for the river where it was recognized, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

A CDC factsheet on Ebola says the disease is "characterized by fever, headache, joint and muscle aches, sore throat, and weakness, followed by diarrhea, vomiting, and stomach pain. A rash, red eyes, hiccups and internal and external bleeding may be seen in some patients."

Scientists don't know the natural reservoir of the virus, but they suspect the first victim in an Ebola outbreak gets infected through contact with an infected animal, such as a monkey.

The virus can be transmitted through direct contact with the blood or secretions of an infected person, or objects that have been contaminated with infected secretions. During communal funerals, for example, when the bereaved come into contact with an Ebola victim, the virus can be contracted, officials said, warning against unnecessary contact with suspected cases of Ebola.

In Kibaale, some villagers had started abandoning their homes in recent weeks to escape what they thought was an illness that had something to do with bad luck, because people were quickly falling ill and dying, and there was no immediate explanation, officials said.

Officials said now that they've verified Ebola in the area they can concentrate on controlling the disease. Ebola patients were being treated at the only major hospital in Kibaale, said Stephen Byaruhanga, the district's health secretary.

"Being a strange disease, we were shocked to learn that it was Ebola," Byaruhanga said. "Our only hope is that in the past when Ebola broke out in other parts of Uganda it was controlled."

The challenge, he said, was retaining the services of all the nurses and doctors who are being asked to risk their lives in order to look after the sick.

"Their lives are at stake," he said.

Officials also worry that other villagers suffering from other diseases might be afraid to visit the hospital for fear of catching Ebola, he said.

Guest Post ? Cal Orey, Discover Honey's Amazing Bee-Healthy ...

cal

Guest Author, Cal Orey

Did you know?? Known as Mother Nature?s ?nectar of the gods,? honey was praised for its healing powers as far back as 5,000 years ago by Egyptians. Drawing on the 21st century honey buzz, health author Cal Orey reveals enlightening honey home remedies, straight from the book The Healing Powers of Honey: A Complete Guide to Nature?s Remarkable Nectar!

7 common health ailments in kids from A to Z and amazing at-home honey cures.

These are tried-and-true folk remedies based on scientific studies, real-life stories, medical doctors, researchers, and beekeepers. But caution, consult your health-care practitioner before putting to work any honey cure.

1. ALLERGIES (Stop seasonal misery): Dealing with annoying sneezing, a runny nose, and coughing is no picnic, thanks to seasonal pollen. But honey may come to your rescue.

What Honey Cure to Use: Try eating a tablespoon of locally produced honey. Proponents of honey tell me that your immune system will get used to the local pollen in it (it should be within a 50-mile radius from where you live).
Why You?ll Bee Happy: By taking the honey cure, you may lose your allergy symptoms. It?s worth the effort and is less pricey than a visit to the doctor or an allergist. Honey may enhance the immune system to build up a better arsenal against airborne allergens?and help you breathe easier. Honeycomb may line the entire breathing tract.

2. COUGH (Outfox irritating hacking): A cough is another unwelcome visitor and can make you feel terrible. Let?s face it, cough medicine can be pricey, doesn?t taste good, and may or may not do its job.

What Honey Cure to Use: A teaspoon of buckwheat honey is recommended before bed. Or you can make syrup of 1 teaspoon lemon juice, 1 teaspoon honey, and 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar. Repeat each remedy as needed.

Why You?ll Bee Happy: A group of Penn State College of Medicine researchers discovered that honey may be the cure. The findings showed that buckwheat honey at bedtime was more powerful for curing a cough in children than a cough suppressant found in over-the-counter medications. It is believed that honey will act as a sedative to the nervous system.

3. ENERGY DRAIN (Beat low energy): Getting your cough under control is a good thing, but then what if your energy plummets? Liquid gold may be the answer again.
What Honey Cure to Use: Each morning include a teaspoon of bee pollen in your breakfast. Go ahead and take it solo. Or try The Honey Association?s Energy Drink recipe: ? pint orange juice, ? pint natural yogurt, 2 tablespoons clear honey. Place all the ingredients in a liquidizer and blend until smooth. Pour into two tall glasses. Serves two people.

Why You?ll Bee Happy: Honey is a source of natural unrefined sugars and carbohydrates, which are easily absorbed by the body. That means, you?ll get a quick energy boost with long-lasting effects. Athletes include it in their daily diets. It was even used by runners at the Olympic Games in ancient Greece.

Thumbs-Down On Honey For Infants

From stinging honey bees to infant botulism caused by honey may sound like ideas for an anti-bee sci-fi film in the works. But in the real world, feeding honey to a human baby is really dangerous and should be avoided.

Sweet honey may contain not-so-sweet Clostridium botulinum spores. This scientific term means honey can cause infant botulism, because babies less than one year of age do not have the developed gastrointestinal tract of older humans.

Bee

Busy Bee At Work.

4. HEADACHE (Bye-bye, pain): Fatigue and headaches are not to be taken with a grain of salt, because it can hurt oh, so bad. There are different types of headaches, and some kinds may benefit from the honey bee?s gift.

What Honey Cure to Use: One cup of tea with 1 teaspoon of honey (the darker the varietal the better) is the remedy. Repeat as needed. Also, drink plenty of water and relax.

Why You?ll Bee Happy: ?The way honey might work for tension headaches,? says New York Headache Center?s Alex Mauskop, M.D., ?is by treating hypoglcemia, which can cause tension and migraines.? He adds that some antioxidants can help prevent headaches, as can magnesium and vitamin B. So turning to antioxidant-rich honey may be a sweet remedy.

5. INSOMNIA (Find sweet dreams): Getting rid of a headache is a challenge, but not getting adequate shut-eye can have long-term effects, too.

What Honey Cure to Use: Take 1 or 2 teaspoons of your favorite honey, especially before going to bed. Try sipping a cup of 2 percent low-fat milk with a dash of cinnamon. The tryptophan in milk will help to calm you.

Why You?ll Bee Happy: It?s a magic trick, according to The Honey Revolution author Ron Fessenden, M.D., providing needed glycogen to the liver so the brain doesn?t go in search of extra fuel in the earl A.M. hours when you should be in Dreamland. ?Consuming honey before bedtime also reduces the release of adrenaline, a catecholamine that raises blood pressure and heart rate,? adds the honey guru.

6. SORE THROAT (Take the sting away): Not sleeping is miserable, but a sore throat can drag you down, too, where don?t feel like walking or talking. Honey has been used as a home for centuries to help sooth one of the symptoms associated with a common cold?namely, a killer sore throat.

What Honey Cure to Use: For relief of symptoms, take a spoonful of your buckwheat honey, as often as you need, to relieve irritation. In between, sip a cup of tea with honey. Also, try pure honeycomb and honey sticks. Don?t forget all-natural honey-lemon lozenges, which also coat the throat for quick relief.
Why You?ll Bee Happy: One, honey will coat your sore throat, the symptom of the cause. Two, the antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties will help heal the culprit causing your pain.

7. WOUNDS (Heal cuts and scrapes): Once you get a flat stomach, what do you do if you stub your toe or cut your finger? Honey is believed by scientists, such as Dr. Peter Molan to be one of nature?s most powerful wound dressings, which really works.

Gifts From The Hive

  • Eating antioxidant-rich honey can help lower the risk of heart disease, cancer, diabetes?even help reduce body fat and unwanted weight!?and increase longevity.
  • Pure, raw, unprocessed honey is a healthier sweetener than table sugar and high-fructose corn syrup.
  • It?s chock-full of antioxidants, minerals, and vitamins?and only has 21 calories per teaspoon.
  • Super ?bee foods? (including nutrient-rich bee pollen, propolis, and royal jelly) are used and touted for their healing powers by beekeepers and medical experts in the present-day.
  • The honey bee pollinates about one-third of the food we consume (including nutritious fruits and nuts which are healthy for children).

What Honey Cure to Use: Try manuka honey, available in many forms. It?s available online in lotions, creams, and bandages. Apply as directed.

Why You?ll Bee Happy: Honey can numb pain. It is osmotic and attracts water. Since bacteria are mostly made of water, they are sucked dry in the presence of honey. Bacteria are further inhibited by honey because the golden liquid produces hydrogen peroxide and is acidic (like vinegar). Honey activates the immune response by providing glucose for the white blood cells. It speeds up the healing process.

So go ahead and use the type of honey advised or your own preference; all-natural, raw honey, dark varietals are recommended for best results. (Warning: To avoid infant botulism, do not fee honey to a baby who is younger than one year.)

Reducing Hearing Loss With Help From Your Hearing Center ...

Health and Fitness | General health | * Written by Alfred Ardis | Friday, 27 July 2012 07:06 | Word Count: 532

We have five senses. Imagine the loss of one. Sight, touch, taste, smell and hearing. Well people lose hearing all the time. Hearing is such an important sense. You can listen for cars coming before you cross the road, you can use hearing to relax with your favorite tunes and you might use your sense of hearing for your job. In fact, we all know when we don't hear our children it is not good news. That's what moves you to get up and check out what they are getting into. Some of these things we enjoy can cause hearing loss. You can always make an appointment at the local hearing center. They can evaluate your hearing. Let us take a minute to explore what the human ear can handle.

Relaxing with your MP3 player while you take your morning walk could cause hearing loss. Our ears can only take so much noise. To give you an idea 30dB is a whisper. 50dB is a normal conversation. A crowded restaurant could be as much as 100dB. Your ears should be able to handle this occasionally. When you leave the bar that sense of relief at the crisp night air, and near silence as you talk with your friend to the car is not something your imagining. Your ears are thankful for the break.

During the evening out with your friend your ears may have endured some damage. You may notice that your ears are ringing after your rock concert outing. By the next day your hearing should be normal. Otherwise, you may be suffering a more permanent hearing loss. This would be due to damage to the hair cells in your ears. You might notice this as not hearing so well when there is background noise. For example, not hearing your friend on the phone while the children chat in the same room. Obviously your children screaming, hollering, and jumping on the couch is another issue altogether. Another symptom of loss is tinnitus. Tinnitus is often described as a ringing, buzzing or whistle that only the patient hears. Relief is often hard to find. So how do you prevent this type of loss?

If you work in a job that has a lot of noise like construction, musician, farmer you should wear your earplugs. If you enjoy target practice you should wear earplugs. Limiting your exposure to noise is the first step in prevention. No one is saying that you should skip a night out with a friend, but take a break to step outside. Your ears will appreciate it and you will appreciate the break once you step away from the group. Stop at a local hearing center and get a hearing test. They can tell you what your hearing looks like and if any loss is something you should treat or if you can.

Not every colorado springs, co hearing center is the same. Go to http://www.miracle-ear-coloradosprings.com and find out what services work best for you.

Manning searching for timing with his new targets

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) ? Peyton Manning's arm strength looks just fine. It's his timing with his new targets that's the biggest question mark facing the four-time MVP as he embarks on his comeback with the Denver Broncos.

Manning doesn't appear bothered by the nerve injury in his neck that led to a series of operations, sapped his power and sidelined the league's most durable active quarterback all of last season.

Ever since he signed with the Broncos on March 20, two weeks after his tearful release from the Indianapolis Colts, Manning has been working hard to refine his rapport and rhythm with his new corps of pass catchers.

He has two old pals from his days in Indianapolis to help him adjust in wide receiver Brandon Stokley and tight end Jacob Tamme.

And he has two of the most promising young receivers in the NFL in third-year pros Eric Decker and Demaryius Thomas, the biggest downfield threat he's ever had.

They lead a deep group of players vying to become the next Reggie Wayne or Marvin Harrison in Manning's aerial show.

"We always talk the opportunities are the greatest right now," Decker said. "We have a future Hall of Famer, a guy who's been to the Super Bowl, an All-Pro, someone who wants to win, too. I think as young receivers, we're hungry, we want to make the most of this opportunity and play our best football this year."

Catching Manning's passes is a thrill for a group of guys who loved Tim Tebow's passion but weren't exactly fans of his erratic passing.

Manning is a perfectionist whom running back Lance Ball called a "player-coach," a description Decker finds appropriate because Manning is that rare breed of superstar who makes everyone around him better.

"It's been great. He's definitely a leader," Decker said. "This guy's going to demand the best out of himself and the best out of his teammates. I think a lot of guys respond to that."

Although he put in hours on local high school football fields playing catch with Stokley and Decker, among others, Manning laments that he only had 17 organized offseason practices to adjust to his new team.

So, he was among the most enthusiastic when training camp got here.

"Now, it's fulltime football," Manning said, the relief evident in his voice.

The Broncos, whose workout Friday was interrupted by a nearby lightning strike, will have 17 practices before they open the preseason at Chicago on Aug. 9.

Manning will be padded up Saturday morning for the first time since playing in his 11th Pro Bowl following the 2010 season.

Before last season, the 36-year-old quarterback started all 277 of the Colts games, including playoffs, during his first 13 years in the league.

He's never faced this much doubt about his durability, or, for that matter, his ability.

Coach John Fox swears he's not among those questioning whether Manning will hold up.

"I worry about all of them but not because of any past injury," Fox said.

Manning said his rehab is a work in progress, and he declines to discuss specifics for competitive reasons, but he said his focus right now really is on developing a rhythm with his receivers.

Decker is the one who's spent the most time on the other end of Manning's passes in Denver, and he said he already sees that work paying off.

"I think every chance you get" to catch Manning's throws "it just makes you better down the road," Decker said.

Manning said it's the Broncos' collection of experienced cover cornerbacks ? Champ Bailey and newcomers Drayton Florence and Tracy Porter ? who will really help Denver's young receiving corps blossom.

Although Andre "Bubba" Caldwell has the speed and shifty moves to push for prime playing time, the Broncos are eager to see what kind of years Decker and Thomas can put together with Manning under center.

Neither has been able to put together a complete season in the NFL. Decker shined for two months last season but faded after Tebow took over at quarterback for Kyle Orton. Thomas missed the first half of the season with a torn Achilles tendon and a shattered thumb but was unstoppable down the stretch.

Decker went down with a knee injury early in the Broncos' wild-card playoff game against Pittsburgh, and Thomas stepped up with four catches for 204 yards, including an 80-yard TD catch from Tebow on the first play of overtime.

Thomas had to undergo another operation to remove pins from his left thumb this offseason. So, he was sidelined once again when Manning signed with Denver and immediately began throwing passes to Decker, his new workout buddy.

Thomas insists he wasn't jealous that Decker formed a rapport with Manning sooner than he had the chance to do.

"I basically just wanted to come in healthy and whenever I started, I started," said Thomas, who returned to the field in May and has been doing yoga in hopes it will help him stay healthy for a change.

Thomas has some catching up to do.

"I'm getting to know Demaryius," Manning said. "I think you see that just like me, there's different phases. There's a minicamp/OTA sort of tempo and then there's training camp, preseason, regular season and you hope playoffs. So, I'm looking forward to getting to know all these guys throughout the different phases of a season, and obviously trying to do my part throughout the different phases. But Demaryius is going to play a key role for us this year. I thought he came back in great shape."

Manning may be new to Denver, but he's already a sage in the locker room, fielding a steady stream of queries from cornerbacks curious about how he deciphered a particular defense to receivers pursuing pointers.

"I like being around young players," Manning said. "I mean, they're all young compared to me. Stokley and I were talking, and it's fun being around these guys who are 22, 23. It keeps you kind of feeling young and feeling into it.

"It's humbling at times when they say they enjoy seeing you play on ESPN Classic. That's not exactly what you want to hear. But I do enjoy getting to know these guys, and that part has been fun for me."

Weaker demand pressures Dow Chemical 2Q

MIDLAND, Mich. (AP) -- Dow Chemical Co. says its second-quarter net income fell 34 percent as weaker demand led to lower prices. Softness in Europe and a stronger dollar also weighed on results.

Its results missed Wall Street estimates and its shares dropped 4 percent in premarket trading.

The nation's biggest chemical maker can offer a broad picture of global economic conditions because its products are used in nearly every sector.

Dow Chemical reported Thursday that its net income fell to $649 million, or 55 cents per share, for the April-June quarter. That's down from $982 million, or 84 cents per share, a year ago.

Analysts forecast 64 cents per share.

Revenue dropped 10 percent to $14.51 billion, missing Wall Street's estimate of $15.69 billion.

Prices fell 5 percent, declining in all geographic regions. The biggest drop ? 8 percent ? was in Europe.

Why do people buy life insurance? Question | Cheap auto insurance ...

Why do people buy life insurance?

What groups of people buy life insurance? Why do they buy it?

You can compare quotes from different companies for free at: Usa insurance quotes

There?s many reasons why people buy life insurance, but many buy it for the wrong reasons. Here are some of the wrong reasons to buy life insurance:
1) To save for retirement (you can do that with IRAs and 401(k))
2) To save for kid?s education (you can do that with Coverdell, 529 plans, or opening a UGMA account)
3) To save for down payment of a home or car (your savings account or money market account can achieve this)
4) Having ability to borrow your own money at a low interest rate (don?t this sound like a scam to you? But its legal since its in the contract)
5) To be insured for the rest of your life (I don?t know about you, but I don?t want to pay for life insurance when I?m retired)

Here are some good reasons to buy it:
1) To protect your income
2) To pay off the mortgage and other debts in case you die
3) To pay for funeral cost

Its quite common that life insurance agents and financial advisors will sell people on the idea of having life insurance and savings together. Its 2 products in one. But the sad truth about these life insurance products that build these so-called ?savings? is that you can only get one of the product back. If you die, you lose the savings. If you cancel the policy, you get the savings (minus surrender charges), but you lose coverage.

If people truly know everything about life insurance and how they work, every single one of them will buy term insurance. But most people are not going to spend time to research these products. So I created this blog that has all the information about the different types of life insurance: http://finance1o1.blogspot.com
The term health insurance is generally used to describe a form of insurance that pays for medical expenses. It is sometimes used more broadly to include insurance covering disability or long-term nursing or custodial care needs. It may be provided through a government-sponsored social insurance program, or from private insurance companies. It may be purchased on a group basis (e.g., by a firm to cover its employees) or purchased by individual consumers. In each case, the covered groups or individuals pay premiums or taxes to help protect themselves from high or unexpected healthcare expenses. Similar benefits paying for medical expenses may also be provided through social welfare programs funded by the government.

One of three reasons:

1. People buy life insurance because they love someone else, and don?t want to see the person, or persons they love suffer financially in the event of their untimely death.

2. To protect a business partner from loss with a buy-sell agreement, funded by life insurance.

3. Some people buy life insurance in order to leave a legacy to a favorite church or charity.

Smart people buy life insurance! Those who are not so smart don?t!

Life sentence in Jennifer Hudson family slayings - KWQC-TV6 News ...

By DON BABWIN
Associated Press

CHICAGO (AP) - The man convicted of gunning down the mother, brother and 7-year-old nephew of Academy Award-winning actress Jennifer Hudson was sentenced to life in prison Tuesday.

Hudson, who attended every day of William Balfour's trial earlier this year, sat next to her sister at the hearing and at one point dabbed her eyes with a tissue.

The sentencing hearing came a little more than two months after a jury convicted Balfour in the Oct. 24, 2008, shooting deaths of Hudson's 57-year-old mother Darnell Donerson, her 29-year-old brother Jason Hudson and her 7-year-old nephew Julian King. The judge sentenced Balfour to three terms of life in prison plus 120 years on other charges.

"You have the heart of an arctic night," Cook County Circuit Judge Charles Burns told Balfour. "Your soul is as barren as dark space."

Prosecutors portrayed Balfour, who was married to Hudson's sister Julia Hudson, as a jealous estranged husband who often stalked Julia Hudson's house after he moved out in early 2008. But Balfour's attorneys suggested that someone else committed a crime in the family's three-story house in Englewood on Chicago's South Side.

Balfour faced a mandatory life sentence. Illinois does not have the death penalty.

The only person to give a victim impact statement in court was Gregory King, the father of Hudson's nephew. He told the judge he felt like his heart was ripped out when he found out his son, Julian King, was dead.

"I miss picking Julian up from the school bus," King said. "I miss going on field trips with him ... I miss him spending the night with me and my other children."

Balfour gave a brief statement, offering his condolences to the Hudson family while maintaining his innocence.

"My deepest prayers goes out to Julian King," Balfour said. "I loved him. I still love him. I'm innocent your honor."

Before the sentencing, Burns denied a request for a new trial from Balfour's defense.
